Farmers' market in Arras, the capital of the historical province of Artois. Before 1659, Artois belonged to the Low Countries, and houses in Arras (restored after German bombing during WW1) display the typical architectural style of the Low Countries.

Another thing we usually do is posting with every pic a little french map with the corresponding departement in red. This thread is mostly for foreigners who want to discover France, and they don't especially know where is Indre-et-Loire, so it's nice to show them it's in center-west and not next to Alsace.

The city of Gravelines, in French Flanders, with its typical Vauban fortifications. Gravelines is located on the southern border of Flanders and was called the Gate of Flanders. It was a strategic position commending entry into Flanders. Controled by the Spaniards, it was conquered by the French armies under Mazarin and became French at the Treaty of the Pyrénées in 1659. After the French conquest, Vauban, the famous military engineer of the Sun King Louis XIV, modified and expanded the fortifications of Gravelines originally built by the Spaniards, and these beautiful fortifications have survived almost entirely preserved until today, with their typical star pattern.
Gravelines (Grevelingen in Dutch) was Frenchified early after its conquest due to a big wave of immigration from the nearby Romance (Picard)-speaking province of Artois. By 1800 Gravelines was already a Picard-speaking city contrary to the rest of coastal Flanders (such as Dunkirk) which was still Flemish-speaking at the time. With the later conquest of the rest of French Flanders during the reign of Louis XIV, Gravelines lost its strategic importance, being now located away from the border of France. Gravelines's harbor also became silted up and the city lost its direct access to the sea and was replaced by Dunkirk as the great port of France on the North Sea (despite the digging of a canal to the sea that you can see in the picture). The same fate happened to several other formerly coastal cities of Flanders, such as Brugges. As a result of these events, Gravelines sank into obscurity and sleepiness, but its fortunes were revived in the 1970s with the construction of the Gravelines Nuclear Power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in the European Union. This big nuclear power plant is not visible in the picture. It lies immediately beyond the upper-right corner of the picture, on the shore of the North Sea which is just at the end of the canal. Gravelines is now a very wealthy place due to the nuclear plant. And it's also a beautiful tourist destination.

Perhaps a lack of self-promoting. In parisian metro we see publicities on Aisne everywhere to break the bad reputation of this departement. Ardennes general council should do the same, since Ardennes departement has the same problem.

The village of Cuisiat, in the Revermont area, emerging from the fog on a frosty morning. This picture was not photoshopped. These are real colors. The damp cold fog frosted the trees lying in the fog, while the vegetation lying above the fog was not frosted.
The Revermont, whose existence I must confess I totally ignored until I discovered this picture, is a small sub-province located within the province of Bresse. The mildly mountainous Revermont, however, is quite different from the rather flat province of Bresse proper, despite being historically part of it. So the picture below is not really reprensative of Bresse. We'll have to post a picture of Bresse proper sometime. But for now, enjoy the little known and picturesque Revermont subprovince!

The town of Villefranche-sur-Mer (literally "Free City-on-Sea"), on the French Riviera, basking in the sun, while the rest of France is freezing...
