Maybe. The company in charge of the project never really release the full details of the project so we just have to wait and see.

Sorry for the late reply. Anyway, so far I have not been able to get the measurements of this project. So until the measurements are made public, no one knows.

SINGAPORE: After being stalled for nearly two years due to the global financial downturn, the Sports Hub project will finally kick into gear.

On Wednesday, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) signed the contract with the Singapore Sports Hub Consortium to design, build, finance and operate the Sports Hub for the next 25 years on a 35-hectare site in Kallang.

Demolition of the National Stadium, which sits on the site, will begin in October, and the new facility will open its doors by April 2014.

The final construction cost is estimated to be $1.33 billion - which the Government will pay in annual payments.

No financing details were available following the midnight announcement.

"I am glad that we are ready to start construction of the Singapore Sports Hub," said Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, in a statement.

"It will be a fully integrated sports, leisure, entertainment and lifestyle hub for world-class events and community activities. The facilities will be accessible to the public and to top athletes to train and compete in. As part of the Greater Marina Bay masterplan, the Singapore Sports Hub will also contribute to the larger Government objective of re-positioning Singapore as a great place to work, live and play," he said.

When completed, the Sports Hub will include a 55,000-seat National Stadium with a retractable roof, a 6,000-seat indoor aquatics arena, about 41,000 square metres of business, commercial and retail space, and a sports institute.

Two new features of the Sports Hub are a bowl-cooling system and retractable seats for the main stadium.

The bowl cooling system features blowing treated air from chillers through holes in the tier below each seat.

There will also be a sports library and sports museum, as well as other amenities including a volleyball court, rock-climbing wall, hard courts, a skate park and state-of-the-art training and sports recovery facilities, among others.

The Sports Hub will also strive to attract live entertainment events, conventions and exhibitions, while 80 corporate boxes will be available for lease during major sporting events.

The deal between the Singapore Government and the consortium is the largest sports infrastructure public-private-partnership project in the world.

Hmm, is this considered under construction?

Went to the National Stadium. Took some pics. There seem to be some cranes around. They are also starting to cordon off the area. Here are some pics.

Construction of S’pore Sports Hub finally gets underway

Work on the Singapore Sports Hub officially got underway with a groundbreaking ceremony held at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan delivered the demolition cue where four excavators started to tear down the grandstand.

The “Grand Old Dame” of Singapore sports will make way for the Sports Hub which is expected to be completed by April 2014. To be built at an estimated cost of S$1.33 billion, the new facility will boast a 55,000-seater stadium with a retractable roof and comfort cooling for spectators, a 6,000-capacity Indoor Aquatic Centre, a 3,000-capacity Multi-Purpose Arena and a Water Sports Centre.

The Singapore Sports Hub Consortium (SSHC), led by Dragages Singapore Pte Ltd, was awarded the development of the Sports Hub project on January 19, 2008, under the Private-Public-Partnership (PPP) project. Under the PPP model, the Consortium will bring in their expertise in various aspects such as construction, financing and programming. The Singapore government will pay the consortium an annual payment, covering construction, operating and financing costs, over 25 years.

The new facility was initially planned for completion in 2011 but was delayed due to the 2008-2009 financial crisis and high construction costs.

SportsHub Consortium’s Ludwig Reichhold told Yahoo! Singapore he is confident that the new state-of-the-art facility will be delivered on schedule.

“This project, we have a lot of time to prepare and we have a big team working so there is no reason for further delay and I am very confident after 43 months, we will all be invited for the opening ceremony,” said the managing director of Dragages Singapore.

Singapore Sports Council chairman, Alex Chan, added that some positives could be taken from the initial delay as it gave the Sports Hub team more time to redefine its design.

“The team sorted out a lot of the technical concepts which were conceptually translated and there were a lot of refining, so that was a big plus for this project. We may be in a slightly different situation so it offered opportunities for two tests, one technical and the other financial so it is to my believe that we are in a much stronger shape both design and concept stand point,” he said.

Reichhold agreed, “We did not plan this [delay], we went through a construction boom in Singapore, we built the IRs and had a strong inflation in the financial crisis.”

“We had to cope with it and the positive thing is that we maintained the working relationship and kept this project alive even though it could have stopped because we couldn’t fulfill our obligations. The government could have gone for another round of procurement which could have lost 3 to 5 years so we found the best solution for everybody which was not easy.”

“The old National Stadium was an icon in its own right – where many of Singapore’s best memories were made. We can only aim to better this with the completion of what will be another national – and hopefully international – landmark, a place Singaporeans can look on with pride, and where everyone can do their part to create more lasting memories for Singapore.”

As a unique, multi-functional sports facility capable of supporting numerous major local and international events such as athletics, football, cricket, rugby and the National Day Parade, Global Spectrum Asia, a venue management company, is confident of attracting the crowds with a vibrant event mix. To date, a number of event organisers have already expressed interest.

“Major event organisers from Singapore representing different genres of entertainment are wanting to be the first Chinese act, first Western act… so for the opening of the facility, we’ll almost get to pick and choose. That’s the kind of recognition the facility is getting right now,” said Mark Collins, Global Spectrum Asia’s managing director.

World Sport Group’s chief operating officer, Andrew Georgiou, added that they will not rush into putting the events plan together.

“We’ve got time in front of us at the moment to create an events plan. The key for us is to make sure the event plan is diversified enough to allow us to engage every possible option at the venue. Our plan is to sit down with the Singapore Sports Council and the National Sports Associations and engage them in every possible opportunity to create a plan that does have a rhythm to it,” he said.

Sports fans Yahoo! Singapore spoke to were excited when told about the big plans for the new Sports Hub.

Said car salesman Jack Chan, 32, “The new design is really nice and I like the thought of being seated close to the football pitch and watching a match there.”

Property agent Mohd. Khairul, 28, agreed. “It’s been awhile since we last hosted a large scale sporting event at the National Stadium so I hope the Sports Hub will attract the best events to Singapore,” he said.

However, some were nostalgic when told about the demolition works at the ‘Grand Old Dame’.

“The National Stadium certainly brings back fond memories of sporting moments like the Malaysia Cup days to hosting concerts like Michael Jackson. It also hosted the late Pope John Paul II,” said retiree David Tay, 62.

Mohd Mokhtar, 45, agreed. “I am going to miss that place but I think more great things will be coming our way with the new Sports Hub,” he said.

I still think they should have selected a larger capacity than 55k for the main stadium of the SportsHub.

Well, I guess they took the 55k cap as a safe gauge. From past experience, in recent years, the old National Stadium was never filled to its full capacity of 60k other than National Day.

True but our population is growing rapidly so i lso feel that they should have a bigger stadium. I'm sure they want to use it one day for the Asian Games!!

I doubt that. When we hosted the Youth Olympic Games, when our budget was $300 million for the whole event, there was a lot of complaints from the public.

I also doubt that although i would like to see it happen. Just look at the London 2012 budget compared to our YOG final cost.

$50,000 reward for missing National Stadium time capsule
Money will help motivate workers
By Koh Hui Theng October 11, 2010

Wanted: The "lost" time capsule in the National Stadium.

The reward? A whopping $50,000.

This is the prize awaiting the worker who unearths the time capsule, which remains missing after a massive search in 2007, when the stadium was first supposed to be torn down.

Now that the demolition of the stadium to make way for the $800 million Sports Hub has begun, it may be the last chance to find this piece of sporting history.

According to a director involved in the project, the $50,000 bounty was included in the contract agreement with Beng Soon Machinery Services, a sub-contractor taking part in the demolition.

There has been little publicity about the monetary offer as he wants to prevent treasure-seekers turning up at the site, which is closed to everyone except those involved in the project.
