#PROJECT: DESERT ISLANDS
About Desert Islands:
A unique multi-experience tourism destination, the Desert Islands, currently being developed off the western coastline of Abu Dhabi, is the culmination of the rich natural heritage and eco-tourism vision of the UAE’s late President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. ![]() DESERT ISLANDS MAP It will consist of eight islands and an onshore gate providing a multitude of experiences encompassing a nature reserve, a cultural destination and a showcase for world-class environmental, conservation and ecological tourism, including the Arabian National Park. The Desert Islands comprise the former Royal nature reserve of Sir Bani Yas Island, Dalma Island and the Discovery Islands – six nearby offshore outcrops, all of which will be linked by a ferry and hydrofoil service, water taxis, private ‘resort’ boat service and regional and sea planes. The overall sustainability strategy of Desert Islands is being developed jointly by TDIC and Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Government’s new advanced energy and sustainability initiative. Marsa Jabel Dhanna The Desert Islands experience will begin with the ‘Marsa Jabel Dhanna’ gate, which will include a 150-room beachfront hotel in Jabel Dhanna, 250 kilometres from Abu Dhabi, which will be the destination’s arrivals, departure and logistics hub. The 87 square kilometre Sir Bani Yas Island will be at the heart of the destination and will provide direct access to a world of natural wildlife, cultural artifacts, exciting adventures, serene escapes and new lifestyles. The Arabian National Park, which will be home to free roaming animals, will take up more than three quarters of the entire island with resorts, eco-lodges and campsites, and at its centre, the Falcon Lodge Peak, where visitors can take lessons in falconry. The smaller 33 square kilometre Dalma Island, will provide a true heritage experience steeped in history and full of archaeological finds, a place where traditional fishing, farming and aquaculture livelihoods continue. The Discovery Islands and their surrounding seas, rich in marine life, are aimed at being a world class example of environmental conservation and ecological tourism. Two islands which will be protected areas reserved for existing breeding grounds for birds and turtles will remain undisturbed to ensure the continuation of a thriving marine population. Two more islands will be devoted to exclusive resorts offering the highest level of service and accommodation. Visitors will arrive by privately-operated ferries and seaplanes. Another two islands will provide a ‘wild camp’ experience delivering the authenticity of untouched, isolated, distant and deserted islands. Development of the destination is to be phased - at an estimated total investment from both the government and private sector to be more than US $3 billion (AED 11.5 billion). It is expected to attract 250,000 visitors when the first phase is complete in 2010. When fully operational the Desert Islands are expected to annually generate AED1.2 billion (US $326 million) in tourism revenues, and create a total of around 6,500 jobs. Consists of eight islands and an onshore gate including the former Royal nature reserve of Sir Bani Yas Island, Dalma Island and the Discovery Islands The Desert Island experience will begin with the Marsa Jabel Dhanna which will feature a two-kilometre jetty, a pier with a waterfront with shops, cafes and restaurants and a 20-berth private boat marina 4,000 hotel rooms – from five-star hotels to small family resort ![]() Sir Bani Yas Island Heart of the destination and Arabian Gulf’s largest nature reserve 64-room, five-star property to open at the end of 2007 Beachfront resort complete with spas, walking trails and canoe rides, the Arabian National Park, a bird sanctuary, safari park, a village centre complete with the Bani Yas Marina, alternative energy production centre, orchard zone and a golf course residential community Sir Bani Yas Bay will be the arrivals and departure point and will feature a promenade, floating restaurants, a cultural centre and alternative energy museum Luxurious beachfront homes and an integrated aquarium and family resort, including a lagoon where visitors can swim with dolphins Dalma Island aerial view Dalma Island A new town centre with an archaeological museum, an interactive children’s learning experience and a tourism and hospitality school Also home to an agricultural research and education centre focused on new technology and integrated alternative energy sources Southern resort holiday homes with water gardens and sunset views. Dh11.5b plan for Desert Islands in Abu Dhabi by TDIC
Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC), Abu Dhabi's leading tourism asset developer, has unveiled a plan to develop desert islands in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi, UAE's capital. The development will be in a phased manner until 2020 at an estimated investment of Dh11.5 billion. Centered around the Al Sila area, the real estate development features malls, marinas, cruise ship facilities, parks, golf communities and waterfront & Maldivian island-style resorts. When fully operational, the desert islands are expected to generate $326 million in tourism revenue annually and create 6,500 jobs. Foundation work on the 42 villas at the Qasar Al Sarab luxury retreat in the Liwa desert adjacent to the main hotel is nearing completion. A pioneering system of tencate geosynthetics was used for the first time in the Arabian Gulf for fast-tracked completion of the resort's elevated retaining walls. Via Gowealthy ![]() ![]()

Desert Islands to open in October 2008
Staff Report Published: May 06, 2008, 00:12 Dubai: The first phase of Abu Dhabi's unique Desert Islands destination, which is set to be a regional showpiece of sustainability, is to open to tourists this winter heralding the entry of the emirate's largely untapped western region on the international tourism and development landscapes. From October, tourists will be able to stay on Sir Bani Yas Island - the former private eco-retreat of the late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The opening of Sir Bani Yas Island, which is at the core of the multi-experiential Desert Islands destination, will be the first step in unlocking the latent potential of Abu Dhabi's Western Region, according to Lee Tabler, CEO, Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) - the emirate's leading tourism asset developer and the name behind Desert Islands. Tabler spoke of the opportunities within the western region, noted for its unspoilt beaches, dramatic desert terrain as well as natural assets, including mangrove reserves and significant archaeological deposits. "The region's proximity to other GCC markets holds out significant advantages," he added. Tabler said the Desert Islands, which comprises eight islands and an onshore gate just off the coast of Jebel Dhanna, a 250-kilometre drive from Abu Dhabi city, will be a flagship destination designed to invigorate and inspire. In the first phase, due to open in October, guests will be able to stay at the five-star, 64-room boutique Desert Islands Resort and Spa, or its beach villas and six two-bedroom 'Royal' villas, being managed by award-winning Thai hospitality group Anantara Resorts & Spas. Dining facilities They can choose to dine in any of five outlets including The Palms - the all-day dining restaurant, the specialty Samak seafood restaurant, a pool bar, deli and lounge, relax with a book in the comfort of the library or take in a game of night-time tennis in the 24-hour fitness centre. Alternatively, guests can stay in a tented Arabian beach-side camp where they can relax amidst nature without even leaving their room. A series of adventure activities including 4x4 guided tours of the Arabian Wildlife Park, which will be home to a variety of animals, hiking trails, mountain-biking and snorkelling in the island's surrounding waters, which are rich in marine life, including turtles, dolphins and coral reefs. Desert Islands has been master planned as a regional benchmark in environmental, conservation and ecological tourism. "This destination will help us assert our sustainability credentials. It will be the quintessential vacation escape enabling tourists to access the previously inaccessible," explained Tabler. Desert Islands is to be a key element of TDIC's planned promotion at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai this week when advance bookings for the Sir Bani Yas Island experience opens. "We are engaging some of the world's top travel decision-makers in the project to secure their support in advance of the opening," Tabler said. "This initial first glimpse of Desert Islands will set the scene for visitors to cultivate a lasting relationship with Abu Dhabi's western region. Boost "Managed sensitively, with respect for local culture and traditions, Desert Islands will provide a significant economic boost to the region and the lives of nationals living there - increasing employment, education and investment opportunities." Desert Islands is expected to generate $326 million in tourism revenues when fully operational by 2020 and create 6,500 jobs. The tourism potential of Abu Dhabi's western region will be given a further boost next year with the planned opening of the deluxe Qasr Al Sarab retreat in the Liwa desert in the Empty Quarter (Robh Al Khali) in September 2009, officials said. "Additional development concepts for the region are currently being looked into and will address the business, as well as the leisure tourism segments," explained Tabler. |

Very nice..lot of ambience and a spectacular scenery!
One wonders what might be done around Abu Dhabi given that most of the Al-Nahyan Sheikhs got really beautiful private Islands. But they hardly need the money I guess. |
