I really miss Mamma Lucias since I moved to Baltimore. Probably my favorite pizza chain and a definite stop whenever possible.

They do have excellent pasta dishes. But one restaurant that may top them is Pasta Nostra. Real economic seafood pasta dishes. Dishes you'd pay $20 for at a sit down restaurant you pay no more than $10 at Pasta Nostra. And when they say crabmeat, they mean lump crabmeat you can actually see and can eat with a fork!

Sofi's Crepes opens first franchise location in Annapolis

Sofi’s Crepes, a hot spot next to the Charles Theater in Baltimore, has added a new location in Annapolis.

The creperie franchise opened its third store and first franchise on 1 Craig St. on Annapolis’ docks. Sofi’s Crepes opened a second location in September 2007, on the ground floor at the Women’s Industrial Exchange at 333 N. Charles St. downtown. Stephanie Hans, owner of the Annapolis franchise, spent about $100,000 to open the 600-square-foot Annapolis location, including franchising fees and build-out.

Hans met Ann Costlow of Sofi’s Crepes at the second location and worked with Costlow as a manager of that store with the intent of opening a franchise. After working with consultants at Chicago-based Francorp, Costlow became a legal franchisor in Maryland in February, and Hans was able to pursue a franchise.

The process of looking at spaces and build-out work took about two years, Costlow said, and cost about $150,000 to start a franchise between marketing and creating an operations manual.

Costlow said she also has received interest to open more locations locally and to expand in New England, but has not yet decided the site of the next location.

Oceanaire files for Chapter 11
Baltimore Business Journal - by John Vomhof Jr. Contributor

Seafood restaurant chain The Oceanaire Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closed four of its restaurants. The Baltimore location remains open.

In a press release, the Minneapolis-based upscale seafood restaurant chain said it has reached an agreement with secured lenders for a restructuring plan “that will substantially improve the cash-flow generation of the company.”

In its bankruptcy filing, the company listed assets and debts of between $10 million and $50 million. Many of its restaurants have seen a drop in sales, according to filings.

Oceanaire, which filed for Chapter 11 in Dallas, is asking a U.S. Bankruptcy Court to close “a number of its restaurants.”

Four have already closed. Reached by phone Monday afternoon, Oceanaire Vice President of Culinary Development Wade Wiestling confirmed the company has closed “under-performing” locations in Charlotte, N.C., Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Seattle. The Minneapolis restaurant and 11 other locations will remain open.

Oceanaire said it has reached a deal with its lenders to for the use of “cash collateral” during the bankruptcy process, “which should provide the necessary liquidity to fund operations throughout the restructuring.”

The company said it plans to pay its vendors for all post-petition purchases, and it anticipates no changes to employees work schedules, pay or benefits, except at the closed locations.

Oceanaire said it expects to emerge from Chapter 11 by the end of the year.

“Today, Oceanaire is taking the necessary steps to position the company for the future,” CEO Terry Ryan said in a statement. "During our restructuring, we expect to conduct business as usual in the vast majority of markets, and intend to work with our current vendors and to continue operations without interruption to our customers."

Oceanaire was founded by Edina, Minn.-based Parasole Restaurant Holdings Inc. in 1999. Parasole spun off the concept two years later.

It raised $20 million from Clarion Capital Partners in 2004, a deal that gave Clarion a big minority stake in the venture at the time (Clarion put another $4.5 million into Oceanaire in 2008). That money helped bankroll Oceanaire's nationwide expansion effort.

Expensive and overrated. You get a better deal at Legal Seafoods and local seafood places. Every heard of Timbuktu near Ellicot City? Great place in the cut. Buddys Crabs and Ribs in Annapolis is good too.

Certainly not a classy place. But the food is good. You pay for service at Oceanaire. We always get the buffet at Buddys, so service was never an issue. I do like good service though.

My problem with Buddy's was the appetizer, salad and entre all came within 5 minutes of each other the last time I patronized the place.
My wife and I went to Oceanaire for a Christmas party last year and the bill for a party of 20 was 3500.00

Where is this Restaurant located? This is typical of the BBJ to omit the "WHERE".

I have some family coming into town for Columbus Day weekend and they're jazz fans. Can anyone recommend a place to hear some good jazz?
