Phnom Penh - Cambodia, "Golden Tower 42" Twin towers 42L - 192m U/C

Cambodia to get first skyscraper
Sales launch in Phnom Penh, 24/01

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7207030.stm

Cambodian officials have attended the official sales launch of the first-ever skyscraper in the capital, Phnom Penh.

The twin towers are to be 42 storeys high - almost three times higher than the current tallest building.

It is the first of three skyscrapers planned in the capital, where the skyline has been kept low - in part to avoid overshadowing royal palaces.

But the government has encouraged the new buildings as symbols of Cambodia's development after decades of conflict.

Although Gold Tower 42 is some way from completion, the launch of its show apartment and sales office attracted government ministers and overseas ambassadors.

The BBC's Guy De Launey, in Phnom Penh, said the launch gave a taste of the shape of things to come.

He said the solid, imposing, gold-faced structure would stand out from its neighbours on Norodom Boulevard - an area of yellow-washed, wooden-shuttered French colonial-era buildings.

But Phnom Penh is in the middle of a real-estate boom - and some residents hope that building up will bring the price of homes down.

"It's more affordable for people wanting to stay in town, and I think it's good. It's secure and they have all the facilities," one resident said.

But other locals worry about the effect tall buildings will have on the city's character

"The original Phnom Penh city [was developed to] be horizontal, not vertical," one resident said.

South Korean companies are building Gold Tower 42 and another even taller skyscraper near the Mekong River.

S. Korean company to build skyscraper, new cities in Cambodia

A South Korean construction company has unveiled plans to construct a skyscraper and new cities in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, local newspaper on Wednesday quoted an advisor to Prime Minister Hun Sen as saying.

Kevin Kab Ryal Kim, executive director of GS Engineering and Construction, told Hun Sen of the projects during a meeting in Phnom Penh
on Tuesday at the premier's residence in Kandal province's Ta Khmao district, according to Cambodian-language newspaper the Kampuchea Thmey.

Sry Thamrong, advisor to Hun Sen, said that the firm will begin constructing a 53-storey international financial building in mid-2008 on nearly seven hectares of land near the Russian Embassy in Phnom Penh's Tonle Bassac commune and the construction is scheduled to be completed in 2012.

In the building, there will be supermarkets, shops, offices, schools, and apartments able to accommodate around 10,000 people, said the advisor, adding that the plan will create 3,000 jobs, reported another Cambodian-language newspaper the Rasmei Kampuchea.

Kevin Kab Ryal Kim said that his company also plans to construct a satellite city on 145 hectares of land on the outskirts on Phnom Penh alongside National Road 6, adding that another city with five-star hotels and an international airport will be built in Sihanoukville.

Hun Sen expressed support for the firm's projects and vowed to ask state institutions to ease the company's work, said the newspaper.
South Korea surpassed China in 2006 to become the largest foreign investor in Cambodia.

The Malaysian group QSR announced today that it will open a KFC outlet in Phnom Penh by years end.

QSR Brands Bhd is expanding its restaurant business under the KFC brand to Cambodia.

The first outlet is expected to be operational in Phnom Penh by year-end, said chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim during a press conference to announce the new venture Thursday.

The group plans to open four outlets initially in the capital as well as in major towns. This would be followed by two new restaurants every year.

The Sukimex site at Sihanouville was purposed as a golf course originally, but the developer change his mind recently because of the property price in Cambodia is rising so much these days, so he used this land to build apartments and townhouses instead.
