Tianjin, China / 天津,中国 (The world's biggest city you've never heard of) PART II: THE COUNTRY

TIANJIN / 天津

Tianjin is a huge city that most of you probably haven't heard of, it has over 10 million official residents (plus many unofficial). I live there in the summer, and my last time spent there was in Summer 2007. I have many pics to show you of this unknown gigantic metropolis!!!!!

(most pics are in the south circle, the last few are in the north circle)

PART I: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=574864

The next few pics are in DaGang/ 大港, the main oil-producing region of Tianjin. Therefore, this area is relatively rich compared to its surroundings.

The next few pics are in DaGang/ 大港, the main oil-producing region of Tianjin. Therefore, this area is relatively rich compared to its surroundings.

Huge power plant for DaGang/ 大港

DaGang/ 大港 is very marshy, as it is right next to the coast and a large portion is reclaimed land.

You can see the petroleum rigs in the background.

These are apartments for oil company workers, since there is less oil here now, many have been laid off and the workers' apartments look rather run down.

We are moving on to TaiPingCun/ 太平村, an agricultural village just off of the main oil producing area. It has had much economic progress over the last few years, but still is relatively poor compared to the rest of Tianjin. Here, you can see the best houses of TaiPingCun/ 太平村.

Here is an abandoned track (track+field) that was built by students decades ago at Mao's urging, however, the school (middle school) now focuses more academics and abandoned the athletic facilities.

Here's a pic of the back of TaiPingCun middle school/ 太平村中学.

Another pic of the back of the middle school from a different angle.

Here you see more abandoned buildings, teacher's houses, as teachers moved to their own houses.

Here is the only non-abandoned building from the Mao era, a bathroom.

The next few pics have more angles of the abandoned track and buildings.

Here's a close up of the former teacher's houses.

Here's the school garden.

Here's the front of the middle school, which looks much better then the back.

Here's a zoomed shot down TaiPingCun/ 太平村's main road.

Here's another pic of the front of TaiPingCun middle school.

And the guard house.

Classic China.

Average house of TaiPingCun/ 太平村, a mud/brick/stone hut.

Here's a pic of a row of abandoned houses from the Mao era. The houses there were much worse then the houses now.

Here's one of the best peasant houses in the area.

New commieblocks are being built, which are much better then the normal houses of TaiPingCun/ 太平村. Many peasants dream to live here.

A pic of a field. In the background are the peasant houses which I just photographed more closely.

Close-up of the new commieblocks.

TaiPingCun/ 太平村 gardens entrance.

TaiPingCun/ 太平村 main road. You can see the huge amount of private business.

Now leaving TaiPingCun/ 太平村. A parting shot of the commieblocks.

Outskirts of TaiPingCun/ 太平村. The buildings start to thin out around here.

Two parting shots of the richest houses in TaiPingCun/ 太平村 from the bus.

Going back to the oil-producing region, DaGang 大港.

Oil company headquarters.

Oil rigs.

The best building in TaiPingCun/ 太平村.

Now moving on to some richer areas, HanGu/汉沽. This is the Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park, which features a soviet aircraft carrier as a tourist attraction. It is quite nice, but expensive (100RMB, $12.5).

Area for future development.

The Pacific Ocean.

Interesting. So far doesn't look like it has 10 million people, maybe 40,000 or are these the outskirts?

Sorry mate but this part of Tianjin looks awful on your photos.

You doubled part of your photos and lots of them show exactly the same places shifted only for few meters.

I know, this is some of the poorest parts of Tianjin (taipingcun 太平村, hangu 汉沽). I wish I took more pics of the rich areas but taipingcun was my destination. Check out part 1 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=574864) for the actual city, where most of the 10 million live (and much richer).

I saw your first part of photos from Tianjin which is completely different than this one. I saw there Tianjin which I expected to see. Thanks.

Dreadful land. The whole countryside looks like it's been scalped at the surface.
