Ah, so that's what the link is. Mentioned it on the previous page, English Heritage have apparently given their support. Must need a new planning app for it.

Now descriptions have been given I would be happy with Design 1 (016). Really like the idea of the trees not being uniformed like they tend to be nowadays. Also love colour of the paving. Will be a welcomed change. As most squares in Manchester have, will there be a water feature or is this omitted?

Did anyone manage to gather and other pics (models, details around the Cenotaph, in front of One St Peter's Square)?

Cheers Flange. Love the idea of identifying which part of the square you are in with the coloured inlay stone. Also the trees will add a much needed bit of colour and will compliment the surround buildings.

A Sauna.

Couldnt think what it reminded me, but there you go. A bloody sauna.

No I want the stark cold granite effect.

I want - someday - to march slowly across that park in my longcoat as trams pass serenely on a grey cloaked Wednesday afternoon and dream I was in Berlin.

016 also appears to show (at least the upper part) of Oxford Road with trees in the middle of it. I'd love the area of Oxford Road from Central Library down to the station to be tree-lined.

My verdict - 16 is clearly the best one by far. It just seems much more flexible than the other design which is too busy, has too much going on and is split into some quite ridiculous zones. The impermeable wall in design no4 is a travesty. I can't believe someone designed that.

Good call.

Berlin Wall 2.

Do Mancunians really need another one? Especially being located next to the Town Hall extension and near and Central Library?

Is it a case of the council know what they want (016) and are putting up a crap alternative to ensure everyone agrees - akin to Metrolink down Deansgate via Trafford Bar street running.

agreed, that wall should make 16 the winner by default. What were they thinking?

I'm a vegetable.

I've upset one or two posters who are no longer with us.(in the said industry) Sorry.

But come on.

7 years(?) of training.

The Berlin wall in Piccadilly Gardens is........(fill in as appropriate)

Yet they somehow contrive to incude a smaller version of the Berlin Wall into the proposal.

Please.

I don't think so. I spoke to someone from the planning department at the exhibition yesterday and what he explained was that of the five schemes shortlisted, two were rejected after the consultation following a technical assessment (related to accessibility for disabled people and other legal issues). That left three practices in the competition, one of which has closed down due to the recession, leaving the two we see above.

I did however get the impression that the council are pro-16, but that's my reading between the lines.

The trees even grow on the platforms and their ramps, smoothly integrating these transport structures into the context of the square. The standard Metrolink Trueform Gullwing roof could be covered with a display of glass in the shades of green
Philip Purdy does not like this.

Anyone remember the hype and hubris surrounding 'the most exciting new open space in Europe' as they were dubbed, a.k.a. the Hangin' Gardens of Piccadilly (as they should more properly be known, and looking particularly dreadful at the moment).

The parallels between that project and this are uncanny. Large office block subsidising overhaul of public space that functions as both transport hub and formal open space; designs determined via competition.

My only hope is for less 'excitement' and more enduring, perhaps simpler and more sustainable design this time around.

1st design:

- natural placement of trees (perhaps too many trees)
- warm light brown paving will juxtapose nicely with the cream of the library and No. 1 St Peters (more interesting than grey or the contrived "lines" on the second
- open space, no clutter, no unnecessary embellishments (allows the worthy buildings to shine)

2nd design:

- too clinical, boring layout
- pointless "zones" around library entrance and town hall extension
- really excessive and pointless "path" leading to cenotaph, looks tacky as hell

winner = 1ST DESIGN PLEASE!!!!
