More from the Betuweroute:


Three different voltage systems are used. The line is ETCS level 2 only.


Depsite the line is in Netherland, there are steep grades upto 25 o/oo in the tunnels under the channel / rivers. Here a diagram from the Sophia tunel, the longest tunel of the line. On the bottom of the tunnel is also the system change from 25 kV to 1500 V.

Two fright trains in Moscow.


Fright train in the suburbs of Moscow taken from the 25th floor ot Hotel Vega.

Locomtives: 2TE10M (4.4 MW, Vmax 100 km/h)
Length: ca. 700 m
Axles: 208
Weight: ca. 4500 t



Another fright train with a very loud Russian Dieselengine in action. The Germans called them "The Drums of the Taiga", the Russians Mashka.

Locomtives: 2M62U (3 MW, Vmax 100 km/h)
Length: ca. 800 m
Axles: 220
Weight: ca. 4800 t

So they'll need locos with the ability to run in 3 electric systems to pull a train from Germany to Rotterdam?

Aren't there plans to extend the Betuweroute to the Rhur region? How is that progressing? Are there any maps?

It is planned to build a third track between Emmerich and Oberhausen till 2013 and to upgrade the line to 200km/h (today's Vmax is 160 km/h). It is planned to install train control LZB CIR-ELKE.

216 C80 Wagons, 20 tons dead weight + 80 tons load.
Weight of the train is above 20000 tons.
This line transported 450000000 tons of coal every year.
