English freight trains are shorter than a lot of places, and also run a lot faster as they share tracks with other trains...

DSB/DB EG-type

Initially ordered by DSB to pull cargo trains up the steep incline in the Great Belt Tunnel, this electric locomotive has been modified to run on both 25k 50hz voltage (as used in Denmark) and the older 15k 16 2/3'rds hz voltage as used in Sweden an Germany. The locomotive now mainly pulls the IKEA and Volvo trains from Sweden all the way down to Germany, through Denmark, without the need to change locomotive, despite the fact that it crosses two different voltages and three different types of ATC.

Lately, it has been tested for approval to drive in Norway. During the test, the full train, weighing 1,100 tonnes and pulled by the single EG locomotive was stopped with the full load on a 25 degrees incline. After just 1.5km of incline, the train had already reached a speed of 70 km/h.

(In Norway it is custom to limit trains to 550 tonnes with two locomotives pulling to handle the inclines)

My favourite European locomotive of all time, this is.

I'm a fan of the Traxx machines, the class 92s, and a few others, but for me, these things really symbolise the European freight railway more than any other.

When i used to Live in Los Angeles i used to see some amazingly long freight trains. I would just sit there and let it sink in...Such a display of power. It's funny when you see freight trains in North america, South America, Australian and some other parts of the world, the trains look so robust while the Europeans look so fragile. But that photo of the Russian train with two locomotives pulling all that weight..Pretty impressive... Anyone have any data on diesel vs the electric european locomotives?

Then you may really like the ultimate TRAXX: the H80 AC aka the IORE.

Yeah those machines are packing a lot of power.

Europe's quite lively at the moment with electric locomotive designs. I'm especially curious to see the first of the new Vossloh class 88 machines tailored for the British market.

On a per axle basis a European electric weighs about 2/3 of it's NA diesel cousin. Because of that, again per axle, it also has about 2/3 the tractive effort but in total also roughly twice the power. Commonly the European electric has four axles compared to 6 for a NA diesel.
Typical European electric (TRAXX MS2): 82t, 300kN, 5600kW
Typical NA diesel (ES44AC): 195t, 850kN, 3200kW

That means a European electric will only be able move lighter trains, but will do so at a much higher average speed. Basically both types are optimised for their working environment. The IORE I mentioned in my previous post (180t, 700kN, 5500kW) and several models used in the former USSR area are a good indication of what a modern freight electric could be capable of if build for the NA market.
