as for Chicagos spire, it was originally 450m with a spire totallying 610m,which was height limit in USA. Its now 610m to roof, so cant really go any higher.
You can get approval for over 2000 feet from the FAA but it is a lengthy process. The chances the chgicago spire will go any higher at this point are just about nil.

There is No limit, but there are some rules to overcome to build higher than 2000 feet.

"A proposed structure …that exceeds 2,000 feet in height above the ground will be presumed to be a hazard to air navigation and to result in an inefficient utilization of airspace and the applicant has the burden of overcoming that presumption."

FAA Rules Section 77.17 Notice of Proposed Construction or Alteration
See rule

So how hard would it be to have the CS exceed 2000'?

It is not difficult, but it can consume a great deal of time. The process is called a "detailed showing" but it will entail a paper trail and one must file the structure under an exception status, for which a case must be made.

It would be much much harder than you think. The actual process for filling out the paper work wouldn't be hard. But the chances of the FAA, which for obvious reasons is generally an "anti highrise" organization, granting an exception when they hold all the cards is, I think, almost zero.

cool diagram cul... love the little people on the 2ifc roofdeck!

I'll be in HK in june.. haven't been there since 1990.

also.. to you HongKongers out there.. is the roofdeck on 2IFC worth a look?.. or is the view from Victoria's peak about the same?

thanks in advance!
