Visby, Gotland
Visby is the only city on the Swedish island of Gotland; it is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the most notable historical remains are the 3.4 km long stone wall called Ringmuren ("the Ring Wall"), that encircles the city and the old church ruins. ![]()

Götheborg is returning home to Göteborg, Bohuslän
The East Indiaman Götheborg is a large wooden sailing ship, a replica of the East Indiaman Götheborg (an archaic spelling of Göteborg: Gothenburg). The original sank off Gothenburg, Sweden, on 12 September 1745 while approaching its home harbour after returning from her third voyage to the Far East. All sailors survived, but the ship was lost. Götheborg returned to her home port on 9 June 2007 after an adventurous expedition to China. The warm welcome by hundreds of boats, 200 000 spectators, China´s president and the Swedish Royal family confirmed the success of her voyage as a flagship for Swedish trade and culture. Ski tunnel, Torsby, Värmland
Torsby has Sweden's first and the world's longest ski tunnel. The facility was inaugurated on June 16 2006. The tunnel is the worlds longest ski tunnel with its 1.3 km. It is 8 m. wide and 4 m. high, with two classical-ski tracks and two skating tracks. The tunnel follows the natural topography of the landscape and is half embedded in the ground. The ski tunnel offers the possibility to ski all year around. The facility is open for skiing and biathlon from May to December. The tunnel is furnished with an artificial-snow machinery and will hold a temperature of 0 to minus 3 degrees Celsius. ![]()

Thai pavilion in Utanede, Rågunda municipality, Jämtland
In 1897, King Chulalongkorn of Siam (present-day Thailand) visited Sweden and Ragunda municipality. Almost exactly one hundred years later, the construction of a memorial building in honour of the King was commenced. The floor-surface is 75 square metres. The internal height is 7 metres (23 ft.) and the entire building, including the sceptre, rises no less than 26 metres (85 ft.) into the air. A stone wall made of Jämtlandic limestone frames the magnificent white building (each stone weighs 20 kgs or 44 lbs.). Inside the pavilion is a bronze life-size statue of King Chulalongkorn. This is the only pavilion of its kind outside Thailand. ![]()

Omberg, Östergötland
Mount Omberg with its surroundings has had an attraction on man, since the first hunters and collectors arrived in the region after the ice age. There were animals to hunt, fish to catch and steep cliffs for defense and hillforts. The mild climate and fertile soils gave extraordinary opportunities for agriculture. Today Mount Omberg is a place for nature conservation, recreation and outdoor activities. Join our guided tours or explore the mountain on your own. ![]()

View from Kinnekulle, Västergötland
Kinnekulle (306m/1,004ft) is a tabular hill (14km/8.5mi long by 6km/4mi wide) covered with fir forests, of a type very characteristic of Västergötland. From the top of the hill there are extensive views of Lake Vänern. The hills in this area came into being some 500million years ago, when the ancient rocks (gneiss) sank under the sea. For millions of years sand, soil and remains of algae, insects, crustaceans and fish were deposited on the sea floor and in course of time turned into stone. Streams of lava later thrust up through clefts in the rock, enclosing certain areas; then, when the land gradually re-emerged from the sea, the more exposed strata were eroded away, while those protected by the lava remained. The result of this development can be seen on Kinnekulle, with its series of "steps" showing the succession of strata from the ancient rocks upward and throwing important light on the geological history of the region. ![]() ![]() Do you see the white thing in the background? It's a castle. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow. |

Correct!
![]() Läckö castle, Västergötland Läckö Castle (in Swedish: Läckö Slott ) is a medieval castle in Sweden, located on an island in the lake Vänern. A bishop called Brynolf Algotsson built Läckö Castle in 1298 originally as a fort that consisted of two or three houses surrounded by a wall. After a fire during the 1470s, the fort was expanded by bishop Brynolf Gerlachsson. Additional construction was made in the 17th century when the castle belonged to Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. ![]()
