FIU has joined UF, Florida State and USF in the Tier 1 ranking of the SUS. Tallahassee will now allow FIU to raise tuition 10% every year to allow FIU to pursue its "FIU at FIFTY". FIU at FIFTY is the administration's goal to get FIU to be a top 5 urban research university by FIU's 50th anniversary, 2015.

Here's the article:

My girlfriend is a grad (she is smart most of the time!), and I heard the Pres. speak at an event about 4 years ago. I'm proud to have such a great instituation of higher education in our community. Friends on the board are energized too! FIU is booming and even if we aren't grads, if you are doing doing business in this community, we should all be proud.
Are they still shelling out student loans to old men? I wanna go back....
Again, nice pics?

They broke ground on the new Nursing and Health Sciences Building a couple weeks ago. The building is being built next to the Health and Life Sciences Building along University Drive.

A rendering of the building can be found on pages 4 and 5 of the Summer 2008 edition of FIU Magazine. Here's the link:

http://issuu.com/fiumagazine/docs/su...b&layout=white

During the Fall 2008 term, they're expecting to start construction on the International Sciences Building across the lake from the Ryder Business Building.

I just received my copy of FIU Magazine today. There is an article about the new Alumni Center. It includes this interesting caption:

Quote:
The new Alumni Center will anchor the west end of a proposed Main Street development between the Wertheim Center and the stadium. The Main Street will be a half-mile landscaped boulevard with student housing, retail shops, an restaurants.
Unfortunately, Miami Lakes is their inspiration. Still, could be cool.

Thanks for posting that, kevin. Definitely a no-frills venue but it seems perfectly suited to FIU's needs. Should be a nice atmosphere.

Update on the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Building at FIU that broke ground in April and is now under construction.

http://www.southfloridahospitalnews....lt.asp?page=54

On April 10, Florida International University (FIU) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at University Park Campus in Miami for an extraordinary new teaching and research facility for the College of Nursing & Health Sciences (CNHS).

Slated to open in December 2009, the new $34 Million CNHS building will also become the gateway to the University’s highly anticipated Academic Health Sciences Complex on campus. Friends of the University including South Florida health care, social and civic leaders will join President Modesto Maidique, CNHS Dean Divina Grossman and school administrators, faculty and students as they celebrate this landmark moment.

Grossman remarked on the excitement generated by the prospect of the new building, "The technology and resources that will come with the new building will foster cutting-edge health care standards and practices, support important research discoveries, and set the benchmark for advanced academic studies and instruction in nursing and health sciences."

CNHS administrators are working closely with the globally recognized architectural firm H.O.K. to create one of the most technologically advanced and innovative health care teaching facilities in the region. "We are creating a highly productive and attractive space that provides an exceptional level of interdisciplinary teaching, research and learning opportunities," explained Yann Weymouth, lead architect on the project for H.O.K. The five-floor structure will encompass just over 100,000 square feet of space housing state-of-the-art interactive skills laboratories, extensive computer suites, specialized training, evaluation and study areas, and ample lecture classrooms. The facility will serve all seven departments of the CNHS: Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Communication Science & Disorders, Health Information Management, Athletic Training, and Health Sciences.

Grossman continued, "The new building represents this University’s commitment to produce highly skilled, culturally competent health care professionals who will serve our communities. We welcome the continued support from the community, private enterprise and government as we translate this vision into concrete reality."

A bit surprised at how simple it is considering how much FIU has been spending on other on-campus facilities/buildings. I guess this is a sign that they are currently more commited to improving academics. Perhaps then they will pursue athletics somewhere down the road. Nice photos anyhow, thanks.

I think the simplicity of it is perfect for now, Endeavor. FIU is not yet a big deal with the football stuff. They've mostly been terrible at the game and struggle to avoid going winless.

Obviously, they have designs on doing something better and competing at a higher level but for now I think a compact, clean facility like they have is ideal. It's not like 50,000 people are lining up for tickets (they aren't for the Canes, either, truth be told).

They're never gonna be playing on a level field with Ohio State or Tennessee or whoever but there's PLENTY of football talent in South Florida and so long as they don't forget the academic part in pursuit of sports I think this stadium will serve them very well in eventually making themselves known outside South Florida.

FIU's University Campus made a cameo appearance on last night's episode of Burn Notice. They filmed near the School of Architecture by 8th street.

Tower crane is up at the FIU school of medicine. It looks like they're working on the second floor of that building. The crane looks to be about 150 ft., maybe 200 ft. high.

^ Right? I heard on the radio today a girl saying that she will now go to the stadium because the golden panthers had earned her respect after winning three games in a row or something.... Kevin nice tour... I see some concrete open air stairs there that lead to the top of a building that's usually desolate - I once shared a killer sunset there... hope I didn't desecrate your school grounds with what happened

No single event has been more detrimental to our environment than the McCain rally at FIU. If SUVs could vote, McCain would win by a landslide.

That FIU College of Medicine building has topped out at five stories. It looks as though they'll do what they did with the Graduate Business building and truck in pre-fab walls, so it probably shouldn't be too long before this takes shape.

Did you know that 5 stories is considered a mid-rise? Thought I'd throw out a random fact.
