That was what I was referring to, center by population density. FIU is surrounded by heavily populated areas.

Look at it another way People who live by FIU often go east for work or business and even more often for leisure (beach, clubs, the PAC, the circus etc), on the other hand people who live in the "dense urban" eastern areas of the county NEVER EVER go to the FIU, Sweetwater, West kendall areas, I know so many people that simply haven't been west of the airport in like years. I mean over 10 years! There's no reason too unless you're driving through to Naples or the keys. I grew up in Westchester then moved to around the Hammocks but that doesn't blind me from the fact that it's a suburb with nothing central about it. |

If anything Little Havana could be viewed as the center of Miami. It has downtown and the Beach to the east, the Grove to the south, Coral Gables to the south east, and the Airport area to the north west. And its the most densly populated large area in South Forida.

FIU is not surrounded by heavily populated areas, it is surrounded by populated areas. Just wanted to fix that.

I drove down to Kendall via the 836 to 826 this past weekend. What is the tall building under construction near the FIU campus? It really stands out.

Are you referring to the building on-campus? If so, it's the 7-story College of Nursing and Health Sciences Building.

FIU's new 2008 admissions rates were finally released. 2008 marks another huge increase in the admissions selectivity. This also makes FIU the most selective university in Florida followed by UF at 41%.
http://w3.fiu.edu/irdata/portal/quickfacts.htm http://www.clay.k12.fl.us/khh/Guidan...der/Matrix.pdf Fall 2004 admissions rate- 64% Fall 2005 admissions rate- 63% Fall 2006 admissions rate- 54% Fall 2007 admissions rate- 44% Fall 2008 admissions rate- 33% In comparison, UF had a 41% admissions rate, Nova: 47%, FSU: 42% and UM: 38%.

Oh man, I wonder if that makes it harder for me. I am a FIU transient student getting my first architecture classes at Miami-Dade, after that I would apply to the FIU upper level architecture classes. I guess I better hurry at the rate FIU admissions rate is falling is gannna get to like 10% in 2 more years.

Im sorry but i have to contest the validity of the numbers, they just seem ridiculous, to claim that there more selective is untrue...

It's all in the links. The data is from the State University System of Florida, which governs all the state universities, so it's pretty official stuff.

fiu may reject more people but that doesn't mean they get more quality students, it just means more mediocre applicants.
fiu GPA:3.20 -3.81 SAT I:1680 - 2007 ---------------------- um GPA:3.49 - 3.89 SAT I:1935 - 2139 uf GPA:3.65 -3.93 SAT I:1920 -2238 fsu GPA:3.50 - 3.85 SAT I:1845 - 2052 |

I hear FIU is actually more expensive than UF too.
They have so many added fees at FIU that get added per semester. For instance, I HATE paying like $75 of parking fees at FIU even though I take the bus

The drop in acceptance rate is also due to the fact that Florida state schools are accepting fewer students in total because of budget cuts, but the number of applicants haven't been dropping. FIU is seeing more and more applicants in general though. But it's true, FIU may reject more students than UF or UM, but it's quality of applicant still isn't quite as high. I do feel that FIU is probably closing the gap little by little though, especially with UM.

I would be surprised if this were true. I know that FIU's law school is the cheapest in the entire country.
