Actually its Riverfront Hospital for the former, and Riverside for the latter. They have different owners.

What does it mean to have a nuclear medicine?

Sa narinig ko ang problema with nuclear medicine is that the tests are freaking expensive.

Plainly said, it's just a fancy term to say x-rays. All kidding aside, it's a branch of medicine and medical imaging that uses the nuclear properties of matter in diagnosis and therapy.

In Nuclear Medicine, we insert a "radioisotope" in a patient's body to treat him/her of something..

In effect the patient becomes radioactive.

As nurses, we are only allowed 30 minutes contact hours per shift (every 8 hours).. Also we are required to wear dosimeter badges.

The patient's urine and body fluids also become radioactive and visitors must stand a few feet away from the patient..

Whenever there's a spill, it's always the personnel from the Nuclear Medicine Dept. (composed mostly of RadTechs) who will contain it and not the nurses, they usually cordon off the area, hehehe..

I was also assigned one time in the Cardiac Cathetherization Laboratory of a hospital here in Cebu.. It's actually like an "operating room" where we perform cardiac catheterization, stenting, pacemaker insertion, and other invasive procedures. They are currently upgrading the lab so that heart bypass can be performed here instead of in the operating room.

Every time there's a pacemaker insertion or cardiac cath, the doctor uses a sophisticated imaging machine that is radioactive to check the placement.. Aside from wearing scrub suits, we also wear those lead aprons to shield ourselves from radiation...

The Cardiac Cath lab and the imaging machine

Control room; that glass window is several inches thick and is "radiation proof"
