Grenoble, France

I went to Grenoble a year ago on a study visit organised by my course leaders, together with their University of Grenoble counterparts, and we all agreed at the end of a wonderful week that we had a great time there and that this Alpine city is definitely a good place to study. Grenoble is commonly known as the capital of the Alps and serveral ski resorts are within driving distance, which obviously meant most of us spent a great deal of our time skiing rather than studying.. that and getting hammered in one of the city's many bars

General information and trivia:
Grenoble has an estimated 150,000 inhabitants (552,000 in its metro area). Its boasts a comprehensive tram service, a system of egg-shaped cable cars ("Les Bulles") that offers great views over the city and an university that boasts an internationally ranked business school.

Looks a lot more urban than I thought it would.
Place Saint André looks very nice.
And even the commieblocks look quite nice

Interesting how many French cities tend to look like Paris' little sisters in terms of architecture. This Hausmann guys really made an impact in France.

Nice. I think there are only two other cities with a population of over 100,000 people in the Alps (Innsbruck and Bozen/Bolzano).

Baron Haussmann was a visionary but its interesting to note that one of the main motivations for the renovation of Paris was to keep any uprising insurgents under control. Funny how war and catastrophes often bring out the best in urban planners!

@Kampflamm- I will be visiting Innsbruck soon, hoping its as monumental as Grenoble.

@lpioe- I heard a lot of criticism towards the towers but for some reason I actually liked them. They dont look out of place and above all are different from what we're used to seeing accross Europe.

@edolen- For you Ive only got this

It's a nice city that is unfortunately being overshadowed by Lyon.

Champollion, the man who deciphered the Egyptian hieroglyphs, lived there.
