BOMBARDIER TRAXX Locomotives To Serve On Hungarian State Railways

MÁV places order for 25 locomotives for national and international passenger

Bombardier Transportation has received an order from the Hungarian State Railway company, MÁV, for 25 BOMBARDIER TRAXX P 160 AC locomotives valued at approximately 80 million euros ($112 million US). The contract also includes an option for a further 25 locomotives. The delivery of the first locomotive is scheduled for spring 2011.

According to MÁV, the locomotives, which operate with alternating current (AC), are intended for passenger service in Hungary as well as for cross-border transport to Austria and Germany.

Dr. Imre Márkus, Chief Executive Officer of MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Co. commented: “Our locomotive investment project and the purchase of the new TRAXX locomotives are very important for achieving better energy efficiency within our fleet and replacing older locomotives. The new locomotives will contribute to the modernization and energy effectiveness of the Hungarian railways. They will enable MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Co. to reduce maintenance costs and continue to fulfill more contractual obligations for international corridors.”

Ĺke Wennberg, President of the Locomotives and Equipment Division of Bombardier Transportation, said: “The TRAXX locomotive is proving itself superbly in the market. There are currently around 800 TRAXX locomotives in service in Europe alone. We are very pleased that MÁV too, has now placed its trust in our electric locomotives, and that we can therefore contribute to the further development of passenger rail transport in Hungary.”

The TRAXX product family is designed for the transport of goods as well as passengers in national and international routes on all networks. It consists of three electric variants (multi-system, alternating and direct current locomotives) and a diesel-electric design. The TRAXX locomotives are characterised by their modular assembly as well as their innovative BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and controls system, already in use in over 3,800 locomotives worldwide.

The final assembly of the AC locomotives for MÁV will take place at the Bombardier plant in Kassel, Germany. The car bodies will be produced at Bombardier’s site in Wroclaw, Poland, the bogies in Siegen, Germany and the bogie frames in our Hungarian site of Mátranovák. The Mannheim and Hennigsdorf sites, in Germany, will supply the propulsion and controls technology as well as the propulsion equipment.

Last units of these trains arrive recently, so all 60 units will be in service soon.

seems that the Hungarian acquisition proved too costly after all...

Austria: Rail Cargo Austria is looking for financial partner

Rail Cargo Austria, the freight subsidiary of Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB, is looking for a financial partner willing to purchase 25% of the company’s stake, Eurailpress reported citing Friedrich Macher, the speaker of the company’s board.

The estimated value of Rail Cargo Austria is EUR 3 billion. Funds gathered through the sale of 25% of the shares would be used for investments in the company’s growth.

In the first 9 months of 2009, Rail Cargo Austria carried 8 billion ton/km, 2 billion less than in the same period of 2008. According to Eurailpress, the company’s loss amounted EUR 100m in the whole 2009.

Hi, it would be nice if you could join this thread and attach pictures of examples of different solutions for helping disabled persons to board the train.

That hurts in my eyes: A new track, but the old alignment with a curve which only allows maybe 100 km/h.

Hungary is such a flat land, why don't the increas the radius of the curves in such cases to allow a continous speed of 160 km/h without such interruptions?

Hm. Apparently that's near a station, so a train probably wouldn't reach 160kph anyway?
Besides, there's the next curve right ahead. I'm pretty sure, they know what they're doing.

I think this is because of zooming.

Not true. Two weeks ago i saw a MÁV Talent in Vienna (Südbahnhof (Ostbahn)), so I'm absolutely sure they do operate.

It's a temporary solution. The new track, suitable for 160 kph, will be built together with the highway, but apparently the highway construction is delayed, and the final plans are not ready yet. Until that, the trains run through Jánosháza village, with only 60 kph. With the new Jánosháza station outside the village this station will become obsolete.
