You gotta be joking! I would vote more for the cleanest city judging by the current pics.

Been living in London for 4 years now and to be honest with you I just can not imagine ugliest city in Western Europe. Just click on google maps any part of London except first 2 zones and start exploring it in the 3d view. An absolute horrid mess, sadly.

Claiming that Berlin or London are ugly is a bit strange IMO.
They both have a lot of filthy areas but also boast plenty of green and nice boroughs. Not even taking into account their overall popularity. The Ruhrgebiet area and the cities of the English Midlands, however, are mostly a post-war mess at its best.

The cities I visited and thought were ugly are Marseille, Rotterdam, Charleroi.
I havent seen downtown Marseille, but i drove through the city(not just the highway) 4 times and was horrified by the state of it. There were slums everywhere, the worst architecture, rundown areas, huge commieblocks, everything was filthy and there were tons of cars and traffic. Ofcourse, i haven't seen the centre, but after seeing what I saw, I never want to go back :') It felt like I was in the slums of some major city in Africa. Rotterdam has a great skyline and nice skyscrapers and all, but I thought the centre was really bland and boring, I didnt have a great vibe over there. The shopping areas also looked kinda destitute. I had the feeling I was in some kind of depressive 60's neighbourhood with only scummy people beside me lol. Charleroi ofcourse is the beast of uglyness, but it's not that big of a city. |

Some of the ugliest I have visited are:
Enschede in the Netherlands. A very ugly city. Badalona and l'Hospitalet have mostly quickly built ugly housing from the 70's and 80's. Koln in Germany is ugly besides the Cathedral and bridge. Driving over the periferique some areas of Paris are really ugly. One of the ugliest urban scenes I have ever seen was when I flew into City airport in London. Huge swathes of industrial wastelands. Brussels is quite ugly from the train. The parts along the track are really rundown in places. A few Asian additions: Many outer towns of Hong Kong are very ugly and plain. E.g. Aberdeen. Still they ooze character. Many areas of Singapore are quite ugly and plain. The entrance into Tokyo from the airport is very ugly. 50 km of industrial wasteland.

It's strange, I agree but is preposterous considering Berlin and London on the equal footing with Paris, Vienna, Prague, Amsterdam and why not Lisboa. When we are talking about a city whether is ugly or not, we don't talk about business activities, but about architecture and urban heritage. Paris is the only city which is mixing both, architecture and business activities. Hence London and Berlin aren't ugly cities, but not the first cities as those who claim this.

It really depends on your criteria. Cities like Amsterdam and Lisbon have city centres that ooze character and charm. Larger cities like London, Paris and Berlin in just don't compete on that level. They add something else though which is 18th and 19th century grandeur which cities like Amsterdam and Lisbon have much less.
