Man I can't wait until that brick is sandblasted.

It'll be so great to see that old Domino sign lit up as well.

Been watching this great SCI-Arc video, a lecture by SHoP principal Gregg Pasquarelli. Highly recommend watching/listening to the whole thing if you have an hour; this guy really gets it. But starting around 34:50, he talks about Domino in depth. Aside from explaining how they convinced their developers and the community to move from the previous "suburban" plan, to the current iteration, the key thing I took away was that the facades of the buildings are placeholders, and that the Northern-and-Southernmost buildings are going to be non-SHoP designs. As Pasquarelli put it, he didn't think a quarter mile row of buildings by the same architects was "good for the City."

Work has begun on the first building at Domino: http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article...r-site-finally

Quote:
Jed Walentas breaks ground on Domino Sugar site, finally

A Brooklyn developer will announce Monday that construction workers have sunk a shovel into the ground on the Williamsburg waterfront for the first of five buildings destined to open at the site of the Domino Sugar refinery, dormant since 2004.

It's a day that just a year ago seemed like it might never come.

Back then, Jed Walentas, the co-head of Two Trees Management, clashed with the de Blasio administration over its demands for more affordable housing on the site, before ultimately agreeing to add another 40 such units to the 660 already planned. But the breakthrough came only after negotiations nearly collapsed. Later, Mr. Walentas and his father, David, publicly accused city officials of overplaying their hand at the bargaining table and risking derailing the entire project. Now, however, those disputes have been largely forgotten.

"Certainly we said things to the newspaper we shouldn't have said as an organization, and I think both sides probably think they could have conducted themselves better—we certainly do," Mr. Walentas said in an interview with Crain's. "But we have a good relationship with City Hall and the mayor's office, and like any relationship, sometimes you do things you wish you hadn't, but you move on and go forward."

Since then, the two sides have shifted gears and are now working in relative harmony, as evinced by the 500-unit rental building soon to rise on the inland side of Kent Avenue. The 16-story, SHoP *Architects-designed tower, with a large cutout in the middle, will include 105 apartments for low-*income residents, plus ground-floor retail space. It is scheduled to open in two years.

Shame about the random cladding though. That fad should remain in the 00s.

What random cladding? This is SHoPs design and project, they do not use random claddings.

The scrambled placement of windows. Might as well be random cladding, it looks just as bad.

It doesn't look bad at all. Look at similar cladding here:

This looks great. So stop judgeing before you see final result, because in case of SHoP it is just unfair.

When this will be built you'll propably write that it's great, I hope I'll remember to visit 11th page of this thread and remind you what you wrote now.
It's gonna be like 432 all over again [I'm not saying you didn't like 432 in the beginning, It's just based on other comments].

If it's a really good looking material, then I can forgive it.

I think those are some kind of silver and coppery metal panels, like on 8 Spruce Street.

Let's see which shop shows up, the one that designed that Porter House addition or this:

In any case, the random window and facade pattern look is an early 2000's dated-looking fad. The Porter House was fresh and new in 2003.

An Organic Farm Blossoms at the Domino Construction Site

Quote:
In the downtime before construction starts at the Domino Sugar Refinery site, the empty lot that formerly housed the massive refinery building has given rise to—wait for it—an organic farm. This is still Williamsburg after all, although the legitimacy of an organic farm at a former industrial site along the East River does sound a little questionable. Earlier reports of the flourishing green space noted that developer Two Trees would allow the occupants of the adjacent, erstwhile Havermeyer Park—North Brooklyn Farms and Ride Brooklyn—to root themselves again on one of the construction sites at least before work on the planned office and tech hub begins. But Bedford and Bowery and Gothamist have the scoop on the farm's operations: the farm will host Sunday suppers at the site that go for $75 a pop including booze. B+B notes that the vegetables in said meals will be sourced from no more than 20 feet away, but if that sounds a little sketchy given the site's industrial past, Gothamist assures that the plants are ensconced by new soil.

Come to think about it - what a derelict site!!! But I love the idea that the oldest building will be saved and transformed into something else. These walls were build so solid that with proper roof it will stand longer than all that they will build around it.
