Potipot Island in Zambales

Flickr photo by Jeff Vergara

Flickr photo by meanne-angelbear

Potipot Island is located roughly a kilometer from the mainland shore of Uacon, Candelaria, Zambales. Uacon is at least 240 kilometers from Manila by road.

Some of the attractions of Potipot Island are: its white sands that completely surround the whole island, the calm clear waters, its proximity to the mainland that allows visitors to reach the island in only 5 minutes by banca, the lush vegetation and trees that provide shade along the beach (and even on the water).

There are no resorts on the island. Visitors usually stay at the resorts on the mainland in Uacon where they hire bancas to take them to Potipot.

Saud Beach

Flickr photo by Ian Ong

Flickr photo by gezelle

When people say Pagudpud beach, it usually refers to the popular Saud Beach. "Pagudpud actually consists of three vast beaches, strung along Luzon's northern edge and hemmed in by huge points jutting out into the ocean. Coconut palm-backed Saud Beach is where the resorts are. Maira-ira, also known as Blue Lagoon, is a few points east. Deserted Pansian beach is still further on, near the bother of Cagayan Province. "

It should be called the "anti-Boracay of the North" since it boast of beautiful white beach backed by rows of coconut palms minus the noise and nightlife of Boracay. In fact you can call it either serene or boring depends on how you want to look at it.

I really regret not going to Blue Lagoon last time I was at Pagudpod. Thanks for keeping this thread tasteful and a feast for the eyes, Poch and Sinj.

Patapat Viaduct

image hosted on flickr

Flickr photo by Goms

Flickr photo by markshooter

Patapat Viaduct is an elevated concrete highway constructed along winding/rocky headlands near the northernmost roadway section in Ilocos Norte (could be considered second northernmost roadway section in Luzon) This viaduct was constructed to solve the problem of landslides in the area which have caused so many vehicular accidents in the past. Footed on the rocky seashore just several meters from the mountain side it gives motorists a spectacular view of Pasaleng Bay.

It is practically deserted except for occasional photo taking from tourists. You should take this leisure drive along Patapat and be mesmerized by its awesome beauty…

Bangui Windmills

image hosted on flickr

Flickr photo by cgines

Flickr photo by terenzever

The Bangui Wind Mills were built by the NorthWind Power Development Corporation to take its share in reducing the emission of harmful greenhouse gases (GHGs) causing global warming and to accelerate the rural electrification of the goverment.

In this area, wind mostly comes from the north-east, from the sea towards the land. To optimize the full benefit of the winds, turbines are installed along the shore facing the sea effectively removing wind breaks and achieving a terrain roughness of class 0.

The 'Wind Farm" as it is aptly called consist of 15 wind turbines. The turbines are on-shore and arranged in a single row spaced 326 meters apart. The turbines hub height (ground level to center of nacelle - that part holding the blades) is 70 meters high (roughly equivalent to a 23 storey building), each blade is 41 meters long (just 9 meters shy of a Olympic sized pool) giving a rotor diameter of 82 meters and a wind swept area of 5,281 square meters.

La Paz Sand Dunes

Flickr photo by Storm Crypt

Flickr photo by rodolfo_santos_jr73

This is part of Ilocos Norte's Sand Dunes National park. Located just on the outskirts of the city of Laoag, these sand dunes stretches a few kilometers from the shores of South China Sea to inland Ilocos Norte. International Films like Mad Max (Gibson), Born on the Fourth of July (Cruise), were filmed in part in this area. Philippine National Artist -- Fernando Poe Jr's Panday movie sequels were also filmed in these sand dunes. The area where the soil gradually recedes to the sand sometimes changes its vegetation depending on the season. During the rainy season, some species of plants grow in the area, while during the summer, the sand area stretches further. In an area from the shore to a few hundred meters inland, the sand is permanent and no vegetation grows on it.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Flickr photo by alexrtan

Flickr photo by Yaki!

This lighthouse is located approximately 35 kilometers north of the City of Laoag, Ilocos Norte Province, Philippines. It is located on a small hill overlooking the South China Sea. This structure was built in 1892 and is still operating up to this date. It is considered as the highest lighthouse in the Philippines(in reference to sea level). The lighthouse signals ships that they are on the northwestern corner of the island of Luzon.

The sand dunes of Ilocos Norte is very interesting to me. If I recall correctly, it's an anomaly because sand dunes/deserts shouldn't occur at those latitudes.

Indeed it is and the photos really do not suffice the actual beauty of our wonders.

Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, Agoo, La Union

Flickr photo by nathandg0924

Flickr photo by nathandg0924

Located on McArthur Highway in Agoo, La Union, the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity is a symbol of baroque architecture common among old churches in the country. The church, which was damaged by the 1990 killer earthquake was renovated recently.

This Basilica is considered the most beautiful church in La Union which was built in 1892. This imposing structure of Mexican-Baroque architecture is the venue of religious rites, foremost of which is the Semana Santa (Holy Week). Also, the much publicized divine visitations of the Virgin Mary in the early 1990’s have established Agoo as a destination of Marian devotees.

Maria Cristina Falls

Flickr photo by kulaysep

Flickr photo by amethyst54

Maria Cristina Falls is a waterfall of the Agus River on the island of Mindanao. It is sometimes called as the "twin falls" as the flow is separated by a rock at the brink of the waterfall. It is a landmark of Iligan City, nicknamed the City of Majestic Waterfalls, because of the presence of more than 20 waterfalls in the city. It is located 9.3 kilometers away southwest of the city proper at the boundaries of Barangays Maria Cristina, Ditucalan, and Buru-un. Well-known for its natural beauty and grandeur, the 320-feet high waterfalls is also the primary source of electric power for the city's industries, being harnessed by the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant.

Batanes is the northernmost and the smallest province of the Philippine Republic, both in terms of population and land area. The provincial capital is Basco.

Batanes part 2

Flickr photo by DGM_Dino

Flickr photo by DGM_Dino

The locals of Batanes are called Ivatans.

Every Ivatan has a favorite typhoon story. In 1905, strong winds suffocated cattle to death. In 1918, a fishing boat was swept away to Annam. In 1921, the cathedral was unroofed and the wireless tower twisted. In 1952, someone determined to recover his GI roof chased after it; he got it back at the town plaza, rolled into a ball, driven about like tumbleweed. In 1987, a Philippine Navy landing ship transport LST ran aground in Basco and a school building was blown away in Mahatao. Five years ago, a fisherman was set adrift to Taiwan. The governor tells of that stormy night long ago, with the family gathered in the living room waiting for the typhoon to pass. The roof gave way, disgorging in their midst a cow. Next day, there was a feast.

In defiance of nature, the Ivatans have built homes like fortresses. The typical Ivatan house is made of limestone quarried from the hills and roofed with grass. Walls and roof are a meter thick; windows and doors small and narrow. During a typhoon, rope nets secure their homes.
