It isn't. It's a one of a kind building, and if it had Victoriana detailing and was in the West End you'd be all over the forum telling everyone to support a campaign to save it.

I love brutalist architecture, mourned Milton Court, love the National Theatre and the Barbican etc. but I won't be signing as I think the estate is just plain bad. I visited it with high hopes last year and came away feeling sooo sorry for the poor tennants who've had to suffer it's depressing design all these years.

Well some seem to like living there.

The architects of Robin Hood Gardens also built this, the Economist Building just off of Piccadilly, which in my opinion should also be listed. It's a fantastic example of international architecture and one of the first in the UK to be built in the tower/plaza design we now take for granted. Amazing.

Derwent's Midtown planning consent

12:39 | 29.02.08

Derwent London has received the green light from City of London planners for the development of its Bennetts Associates-designed office building at Chancery Lane.

By Jonathan Brasse

The listed company announced today that the City had resolved to grant planning permission for a 102,900 sq ft office scheme wrapped around a central courtyard at 40-45 Chancery Lane. It will also involve a small amount of retail space. It will replace three multi-let buildings totalling 71,146 sq ft.

Derwent London has a large presence in London’s Midtown. Other buildings owned include the Johnson Building in Hatton Garden.

Nigel George, director at Derwent London, said: ‘The scheme was well researched to achieve divisible floorplates which will appeal to a wide range of occupiers, together with a private courtyard offering tenants break out spaces.’

City finds Resolution to lack of luxury beds

29.02.08

Resolution Property plans five-star hotel at Queensbridge House

By Laura Chesters

Resolution Property is drawing up plans for a luxury hotel on the banks of the River Thames in the City of London.

It will begin a search for a five-star operator next week and will submit a planning application for a 300-bedroom hotel at the Queensbridge House site on Queen Victoria Street by the spring.

The plans for a luxury hotel in the Square Mile are welcomed by City planners who have actively encouraged retail, hotel and residential development in the area.

Peter Rees, chief planning officer at the City of London, said: ‘It is all part of being a more rounded place. There is a strong desire from hotel operators to come to the City. The number of hotel rooms has grown to 2,000, and in just the last five years we have gone from just one five-star hotel the Great Eastern at Liverpool Street station to four five-star schemes in the pipeline.’

Resolution plans a 200,000 sq ft, 300-bedroom hotel, nine high-end flats, a restaurant, conference space, a spa and health club, a five-storey atrium area and a bar area overlooking the river.

Resolution has hired hotel agent Jones Lang LaSalle to find a five- or four-star operator for the hotel and will begin marketing at a hotel conference in Berlin next week.

Robert Wolstenholme, director at Resolution, said: ‘One of the criticisms of the City as a hotel destination is that it is just a five-day-a-week location but this is changing.’

If planning consent is granted, the hotel scheme will also open up the river walkway between the Millennium Bridge and the Tower of London. Resolution plans to open the hotel by 2011, in time for the Olympics.

It will join a raft of hotel schemes planned in the City. Vladimir Chernukhin, former deputy finance minister of Russia, has designs for a luxury hotel at the former Midland Bank headquarters at 27 Poultry.

A planning decision is due by the summer. DPA advises.

And US hotelier Thomas Enterprises plans a luxury hotel at 10 Trinity Square, but planning and legal rows have delayed its development. Waldorf Hilton is also understood to be looking for a site for its UK debut.

Planning permission for a revamped Great Ormond Street hospital, designed by Llewelyn Davies Yeang, has been given the go-ahead.

The £300m centre includes a clinical building and a refurbished cardiac wing. They will include wards, operating theatres, imaging facilities, playrooms, offices and a restaurant. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions by 20%. Construction will start in October and is set to finish in 2011.

Estates Gazette -

This week's magazine is carrying a rendering of a groundscraper proposed for Fenchurch Street which I haven't seen before but I suspect it is the same 15 storey scheme discussed here over the past couple of weeks.

The rendering was of a traditional shoe box of glass windows framed in an opaque material (possibly stone) making up about two thirds of the height topped by a fully glazed zany roof extension which was estentially a zig zag of glass.

In other Estates Gazette news Apple are going to open their second central London store in Covent Garden.

Queensbridge House, is that the modern block that spans over Queen Victoria St? If so it's been a long time coming - a real eyesore.
