Fountains, Lights & Trees Proposal
A few years back, a number of collegaues and I (who had formed a property industry group) were going to make a beautifcation proposal to the MCC to startegically add the following beautification features in parts of the city which could do with a lift (or would even look better with the additions):
- add fountains (that will have lighting in the evening) in certain roads, junctions and pedestrian areas; - put lights in the trees of certain roads (like the lights in the trees at the Paris end of collins st); - add more appropariate trees in particular strategic spots (trees need to match the area that they are being added to). This was a proposal that was not costly, but would make an enormous impact in certain places. For example: - the docklands end of collins, bourke & latrobe - which can do with a lift - lights, some strategic water fountains in the pedestrian areas - imagine fountains popping in the middle of the street behind Yarra's edge (which can do with a lift) - fountains popping up in middle of Jacka blvd whrere they are going to plant palm trees There are many locations around town that could get a huge lift with these simple and timeless additions. -

Agree fountains are great. Probably not the best time to be floating these ideas - what with the drought and all.

Yes, but trees are most important during this time of global warming.

Akam...of course you are right.....I just get so frustrated living with all the bloody rules these days....if you made a list of laws and rules comparing 1958 to 2008 it would make you realize that bit by bit freedom and life is being sucked out of everything.....But we should stay positive and enjoy anyway to improve things without 'Scrooge' winning every step

![]() Could you imagine if fountains and lights were dotted around the city like that ? What an impact that would have...everyday you would drive/walk by (day or night) and you would enjoy the feel.....

I never understood why they drained the fountains. It was recycled water anyway and had only just been topped up.
What pisses me off is that Melbourne City Council dumped the fountain water in the Yarra River. |

Have a theory....desert begat desert....If Melbourne got all it's fountains going....and heavily watered all it's parks....and everyone else heavily watered their gardens the amount of evaporation from the greater Metroplitan area would cause giant clouds to form above the city.....with eastward prevailing breeze. they would lumber just far enough to unload tons of water directly over our catchment areas....for the cycle to start all over again....that's what happens up north...but the more you dry out the land the less rain it will receive....just my theory anyway...and the fountains look better switched on.......
