Kenanga Wholesale expects lucrative business at new centre

THE garment wholesale scene in Malaysia is still vibrant although it faces “a slight hiccup” due to the economic slowdown, said Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer Yee Ia Howe.

“Business is still doing well in this area, getting busier everyday. In fact, the rental rates here have increased about 20% during this slowdown period,” he told StarBiz, referring to the garment wholesale centre in Jalan Kenanga, off Jalan Loke Yew in Kuala Lumpur.

“If you want to rent a shop here, the waiting list is two years. Even when the rental rate was increased just recently, tenants are still willing to pay to continue doing business here.

“That shows how vibrant the business is doing in this area,” Yee said, adding that rental rates there were quite competitive at about RM50 per sq ft.

The centre was established about 30 years ago for the wholesale business of clothes, fashion accessories, shoes and bags.

There are 400 shops at the Kenanga wholesale centre catering to retailers, fashion boutiques, shopping malls and the public.

Yee said about 70% of the products at the wholesale centre were for the local market and the balance exported to countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Brunei.

“Prices of the products here are half (of) what’s quoted in the ordinary shops or shopping malls. Here, if you want to buy clothes, you need to buy at least six pieces.

“This is what the wholesale concept is all about, buying in quantity,” Yee said, adding that all the goods were targeted at the medium and low-end market.

The bustling business at the Kenanga wholesale centre has led to parking problems, and coupled with demand for more shop lots, the owners of the centre decided to build a new 22-storey wholesale centre called Kenanga Wholesale City.

Scheduled for completion by end 2010, the project has a gross development value of RM800mil and sits on a 3.2-acre site beside the existing centre.

Demand was so good that all the units at the new centre were taken up during the groundbreaking ceremony of the development in December last year.

About 65% of the new units were taken by existing owners at the Kenanga wholesale centre and the remaining units by newcomers.

“We didn’t even advertise in any newspaper or TV to promote the new development. Yet the response was so good that we used only RM200,000 just for that event,” Yee said, adding that the company had allocated about RM8mil for advertising and promotion of the new building.

Yee said the current gloom and doom in the business world had resulted in negative sentiment, but not in the garment wholesale business, although he acknowledged that business might slow a little this year.

“We want to show people that if you have good planning, better location and good demand for your products, all these negative sentiments can be proven wrong,” he said.

Yee sees a softening of the garment wholesale market this year, but still expects the business to be profitable.

Kenanga Wholesale City offers 400,000 sq ft of total net lettable area with 1,800 parking bays.

It also has food and beverage outlets, a rooftop courtyard and a convention area for events and trade shows.

KUALA LUMPUR: The construction work of a 19-storey wholesale centre is causing frequent water supply disruptions in the Jalan Hang Tuah area.

Residents in the area said there had been frequent burst pipes due to the construction work in Jalan Gelugor.

They also fear that the water from the burst pipes would cause soil erosion.

Jalan Hang Tuah flats residents' association chairman Ismail Abdullah said while Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor was quick to repair the pipes whenever a complaint was made, the contractor should also be held responsible.


"The construction work started about four months ago but the problem became worse a month ago. We experience water supply disruptions at least two or three times a week.

"We want the developer to stop their ground work and focus on remedy work around the pipes before resuming their project. We fear that the road may give way due to the water from the burst pipes," he said during a peaceful protest staged by residents at the site.

Retiree Elizabeth Wong, 68, said it was inconvenient for her family as the water supply disruption would last for hours.

"A water truck would be sent to us whenever the problem occurs but I can't bring that many pails up to my unit on the 14th floor. Sometimes, I have to ask my neighbours to help me to bring the pails to the lift," said Wong.

Shop owner Yong Kok Leong, 46, said the tremor from the construction work had also caused cracks at his shoplot.

"The contractor came to repair the cracks in February and March, but is there any guarantee for our safety and will the developer compensate us should something happen to us or our property?"

A ray of light for Jalan Gelugor folk

RESIDENTS of the Hang Tuah Flats as well as the business community around Jalan Gelugor, off Jalan Kenanga, in Kuala Lumpur will no longer face water supply disruption in their area.

For more than three months, the residents and traders have been facing frequent burst pipes caused by a new development called the Kenanga Wholesale City.

The entire area in Jalan Kenanga connects Jalan San Peng, Jalan Pudu and Jalan Gelugor which falls under both the Bukit Bintang and Cheras constituencies.

A local daily reported that the residents used to carry pails of water from a tank that was despatched whenever there was a water supply disruption.

The community also faced traffic congestion as the entire area is densely populated and this is made worse by the traffic flow along Jalan Meranti, which is the largest wholesale garment industry in the country.

Since construction began six months ago, the incoming lorries and road work have added to the congestion especially in Jalan Gelugor where the construction is taking place.

The residents who were fed up with the problems staged a protest recently to voice their displeasure with the developers.

Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun and Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai together with the developer and the Malaysian Garments Wholesale Merchants Association have come up with a solution for the residents and traders.

They held a press conference at the association’s centre located in Jalan Meranti 1, off Jalan Kenanga, yesterday to announce the plans.

“The developer has agreed to install pipes worth more than RM200,000, replacing the old ones that keep bursting due to earth movement,” Fong said.

He added that the piling work that should be completed within two weeks was the cause for the earth movement which resulted in the burst pipes.

Kenanga Wholesale City managing director Bernard Bong said they were waiting for approval to lay the new pipes.

“After getting the approval, the problem will be solved. The pipe measures 200m and we will begin as soon as we get the approval,” he said.

Bong also said they would be resurfacing the roads which were damaged by the lorries frequenting the area.

Tan said they also hoped to reduce the traffic congestion in the area by building a road that had been designated as a road reserve and had been named Jalan Lengkuas.

“Although the developer has agreed to bear half the cost of building the new road, I still think it is the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s responsibility to do so,” Fong said.

The 30m road connects Jalan San Peng and Jalan Gelugor and runs parallel to the Ampang LRT line.

He added that he would immediately send a letter to the DBKL for the approval of the new link road.

Tan, on the other hand, said the DBKL’s monitoring mechanism was poor and they should take the initiative to watch all the new developments taking place in KL.

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents and traders in Jalan Hang Tuah can expect their water woes to be over soon.

Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd, the developer of a 19-storey wholesale centre in the area, has agreed to replace the old water pipe.

It was reported yesterday that the residents and traders had been facing frequent water disruptions due to the construction of the wholesale centre in Jalan Gelugor.

Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd managing director Bernard Bong said the company would replace the 40-year- old pipe after getting City Hall's approval to lay a new pipe.


He said once the permit had been approved, work to lay the pipe should be completed within one week.

"The pipe that is running along Jalan Hang Tuah is old, eroded and needs to be replaced.

"We hope that City Hall will approve our permit fast, so that we can start work on the pipe," he said. Bong was speaking at a press conference held at the Malaysian Garments Wholesale Merchants Association yesterday.

Bong also said that the company would look into resurfacing all the roads that had been damaged by its lorries.

On the issue of traffic congestion in the area, Bong said there was a road reserve which ran parallel to the railway tracks in Jalan Gelugor which needed to be developed.

He said that Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd is willing to bear half of the cost of building the road if City Hall approves the project.

"We hope that City Hall can work together with us to build the road," said Bong.

Once completed, the new road will connect Jalan Gelugor to Jalan San Peng.

Bukit Bintang member of parliament Fong Kui Lun said he would write to mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail to get the approval to build the road.

Emergency evacuation as road caves in

DESPITE the danger of their homes collapsing after a large section of Lorong Gelugor caved in on Saturday evening, some residents are still returning to their homes to salvage their belongings on Sunday afternoon.

This followed the emergency evacuation of about 100 people by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall when the area was declared unsafe for occupation.

StarMetro visited the scene yesterday and found the entire section around the collapsed road had been cordoned off.


Wet and messy: A burst water pipe in the basement of the project is believed to be the cause of the incident

Some residents were temporarily relocated to a nearby hotel while a few remained to look after their homes.

Eyewitness Umihani Sudin, a resident at the JKR quarters affected by the cave-in, said the road had gradually collapsed at 4.30pm on Saturday and, two hours later, a large section of the area near her home was literally swallowed by a large gaping hole near the construction site of a wholesale mall.

“We saw with our own eyes how the road sank and the project’s retaining wall had given way,” she said.



She was referring to the project site of Kenanga Wholesale City in Jalan Merlimau, off Jalan Kenanga, in Cheras, with the San Peng flats in the background, where part of it had caved in last Saturday evening.

As Umihani’s home was a corner lot, she had a side parking space that was damaged with cracks on the ground following the impact of the crash.

“As my house is nearest to the scene, I need to shift my belongings out fast as I fear for my family’s safety,” Umihani, who had lived there for 20 years, said.

She was busy lugging her essentials and furniture out of her home to move into another block of quarters down the road where there were a few vacant units.

“We put up at the hotel on Saturday night and were told that we would stay on,” the 42-year-old housewife said.

Another resident Anucia Augustine said her family had been evacuated to a nearby hotel where they were expected to stay for the next three days.


Remedial measures are being taken and the site has been cordoned off by the police while plastic sheets are being used to prevent further damage.

“We heard a loud rumbling noise and scrambled to grab whatever belongings we could because we feared that our house would also collapse,” the 27-year-old administration executive said.

She returned to the quarters where her father in-law lived to dry her laundry.

The business community in the area was also affected by the incident.

A morning wet market was closed for business yesterday and today due to proximity to the site.

Trader C.H. Song said the traders needed to know how long they had to be closed because they were suffering losses due to the closure.

“Since the project started, the roads and pedestrian pavements here have been damaged and are in a bad state.

“Although they did come to repair the cracks, they were signs of things to come.

“Thank goodness no one was hurt or killed as the cave-in happened in the evening, after our market had closed,” Song said.

Trader Abdullah Hussein, 62, who runs a small sundry stall near Lorong Gelugor was surprised to find the police barring him from going to his usual spot.

“I have been doing business here for seven years and now the spot I usually take up is no longer there so it was quite tough to find another spot,” Abdullah said, adding that the situation had caused a lot of confusion among the people living there.

He added that water seeping out from the ground was a common sight along the road.

Another resident, who declined to be named, said the project developer had carried out repair work on Lorong Gelugor several times.

“The section where the wholesale mart is being built had sturdy piling to support its foundation.

“However, the weak spot was in Lorong Gelugor and I saw them repairing a burst water pipe there many times,” the resident said.

Sundry shop owner Santhy Malaisamy, 61, was shocked when she heard a loud rumbling noise and quickly ran out of her house to see what had happened.

“I could feel the floor sinking and then the cracks started appearing on the floor and I just did not know what to do,” Santhy, a mother of five, said, adding she was now staying with her son.

She owned a sundry shop located on the ground floor of her renovated double-storey house and lived with two of her sons and one worker who helped her at the shop.

Several Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) employees were seen restoring electricity supply to 61 shophouses in the area after power was cut on Saturday.

When asked, a TNB employee said electricity was re-routed to the shophouses by a sub-station inside the San Peng flats after electrical cables were severed when the road collapsed.

Builder told to stop work until report ready



A TEMPORARY stop-work order has been issued to the developer effective Saturday, the day the cave-in happened.

According to Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail, the stop-work order is pending an independent, technical report to be prepared by Public Works Department (JKR) Slope Department and also by other agencies like Syabas.

“The result of the report should be out tomorrow. Until then, I cannot say yet what action would be taken against the developer or what recommendations to give to the people.


“However, we are not taking things for granted and the most important thing now is remedial work,” he said.

It is learnt that 22 families have been ordered to evacuate their premises. Of the 22, 10 were staying at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) quarters and the remaining 12 at the JKR quarters.

“The developer’s consultant has gone down to the ground with me on Saturday night and given me a black and white assurance that the surrounding areas are safe,” Ahmad Fuad said.

He said initial checks by the JKR had shown that the cause was due to an burst underground pipe in the three-level basement car park, and that water had been leaking.

“I’ve also met the affected families and are offering them either the option of staying at the DBKL flats in San Peng or at Kg Muhibbah in Puchong.

“The JKR is taking care of those staying at its quarters but if these families come to us, we will still help,” the mayor said.

Representatives from JKR, including Public Works II deputy director Datuk Mohd Noor Yaacob, Kuala Lumpur JKR director Adanan Sukri Musa and JKR corporate management branch director Datuk Abdullah Abdul Rahman met the affected residents of the JKR quarters the day after the incident to discuss their options.

“They have three options including moving to safer quarters in the same area, to quarters located at the 4 1/2 and 6 1/2 mile at Sungai Besi or to the Hardcore Poor Housing Programme (PPRT) Puchong,” Adanan said.

The disrupted electricity and water supplies to the other quarters will be restored as soon as possible by TNB and Syabas according to Adanan.

He added that only eight JKR quarters with a total of 59 people were affected while the remaining four affected quarters were empty.

Adanan said each affected resident was given RM25 per day as compensation.

Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, who was at the scene on Saturday evening and yesterday morning, said he had called for a meeting to be chaired by the DBKL deputy director-general today at 11am between the parties concerned.

“I’ll be there too and have roped in Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun to join in,” Tan said.

He said he had also formed a six-man committee to look into the welfare of the traders in view of the losses they suffered.

“How long the market will be closed will be determined later. The developer’s consultant has said the surrounding areas are safe, but it needs to convince the DBKL that is the case,” Tan said.

Residents glad to return home

MAIZON has been selling kuih and living at the Public Works Department (JKR) quarters for the past 23 years and remembers having a foreboding feeling whenever she opened her stall along Lorong Gelugor every morning.

“Ever since the Kenanga Wholesale City project started, there has been constant water supply disruption in the area and leaks from the underground pipes that spilled onto the road,” Maizon, 59, said.

Rozali Awang, 50, had not heard about the collapse in Lorong Gelugor when he came home from work on Saturday night and although his house was unaffected, his family had to stay overnight at a relative’s home as there was no electricity or water.

“I was a bit disorientated when I saw the police cordoning off in the area and I arrived home to darkness and was told the supplies have been cut off earlier,” Rozali, an electrician said.


Moving time: A resident moving his belongings to his new quarters in the same area.

He added that the quarters had been his home for the past 15 years and was relieved to be able to move back yesterday after the supplies were reconnected the night before.

“They (TNB and Syabas) were very efficient and I am happy about it,” Rozali said as he watched the Syabas workers fixing the water tanks above his home yesterday.

Syabas had also provided a few water tanks in the area on the same evening the collapse happened.

The eight families who had been evacuated from the JKR quarters and were staying at a hotel nearby temporarily, were also able to move into their new homes yesterday.

“We have been given quarters in the same area and were told we would not be able to go back to our old homes as it would not be fixed yet, pending the wholesale city’s completion,” Abdul Wahab Ismail, 45, an administration assistant said.

Wet market traders who were unable to operate at the market next to the construction site have resumed business today following a meeting between Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL), the traders and Kenanga Wholesale City developers.

“The area has been declared safe and we are in the process of preparing compensation for the traders who had been unable to carry out their business for the past two days,” Kenanga Wholesale City centre manager Angeline Yee said.

Yee added that they were awaiting DBKL’s full list of traders so that they ccould estimate the amount of compensation.

They were also providing a long-term solution by building a new marketplace in Jalan San Peng on an empty plot of land.

“We are leasing the land from the owner to build a new wet market for the traders who have complained about cracks appearing at the current building,” Yee said.

She also said Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd had been replacing the old pipes in the area and had only managed to replace those in Jalan Gelugor since the project started end of last year.

The developers have also agreed to bear the cost of putting up the evacuated families at Hotel Phoenix as well as the remedial costs incurred due to the collapse.

The cave-in was caused by a burst underground water pipe due to excavation works for the project’s three-level basement car park.

Syabas: We are not to blame for incident


SYABAS said it had not received any complaints on broken or burst pipe in Jalan Merlimau since July 8.

It said the landslide at the construction site has caused the road to collapse and the new underground pipe to break.

“The developer has recently installed this new pipe of mild steel measuring 150mm and when it broke, it caused water supply interruption to about 70 households in both DBKL and JKR quarters on the night of the incident,” said Syabas general manager (corporate communications and public affairs) Abdul Halem Mat Som in the statement.

“However, Syabas has immediately installed an ‘end cap’ and ‘by pass’ and the work was completed at 4am on July 25> Three water tanks were placed at the quarters area for the residents to get their supply.

“The bypass connection has also been made and completed at 9pm on the same day so that the rest of the people can get their water supply.

He added that the mild steel pipe was of high quality and could not break easily.

“Also, the pipe is new. Hence in this case, Syabas is of the opinion that the tremor that occurred when construction work was carried out has caused the earth’s structure to shift and ‘disturbed the pipe’s positioning.

“Indirectly, the unstable earth has caused the pipe to break,” he said.

He added that Syabas hoped the developer would seriously look into such incidents especially in carrying out work that involved Syabas’ network of pipe connections.

“Information on existing pipe networks have to be gathered by the developer before excavation work for their project can start.

“This is to avoid pipe-bursting.

“Such incidents can affect the name of Syabas as the water supplier for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya,” said Abdul Halem.

KL mayor: Remedial work being carried out at caved-in area

THE stop-work order at the development project in Jalan Merlimau, off Jalan Kenanga, where part of the road had caved-in on Saturday, stays.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail said the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would not lift the stop-work order until it was satisfied with remedial work being carried out.

On Saturday at about 6pm, a major portion of Jalan Gelugor collapsed.

The road was near the Kenanga Wholesale City project which is under construction.


Huge hole: Excavation work for the three-storey basement carpark at the Kenanga Wholesale City construction site caused some old underground pipes in Lorong Gelugor to burst and eventually caused the cave-in.

Twenty-two families were ordered to move out and they were provided accommodation at a nearby hotel.

During StarMetro’s visit to the area yesterday, yellow tape was still placed around Jalan Gelugor and other affected roads.

A meeting was called yesterday morning chaired by DBKL deputy director-general Datuk Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz and attended by Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, developer’s representatives, and also the wet market traders’ representatives.

Ahmad Fuad said he had received the report from the developer’s consultant although he could not be present for the meeting.

“While I have received the report, I now want to get an independent input from JKR (Public Works Department).

“There are various technical issues that I wish to clarify with JKR pertaining to the safety of the area.

“I want to know more and get a second opinion on the report.

“If the JKR is happy with what has been prepared in the report, then I’ll rely on their advice.

“Yes, the consultant has mentioned the remedial work they will carry out, but I want the JKR Slope Department to see if these measures are adequate or if more needs to be done.

“For now, the developer must concentrate on the remedial work,” said Ahmad Fuad.

Tan, when contacted, said a few resolutions have been put forward at the meeting.

“We have requested for Amin Nordin to seek a decision with the mayor as to whether the wet market is safe for trading.

“The developer’s consultant engineer has claimed the market is safe, but this applies to only the market proper under shelter and not the open-air one, which borders part of the road that had caved-in.”

“For the open-air market, there are about 80 traders who will be relocated temporarily to a site near the market.

“The developer has said it requires three months to build the retaining wall and place sheet piling.

“So I’ve asked DBKL to level the land (where the 80 will be relocated to) and draw lots.

“As for the sheltered area, there are 196 hawkers and Amin Nordin said they could resume trading today,” he added.

Tan claimed the developer had agreed for a goodwill amount to be paid to the traders compensating their loss of income over the days they could not trade, although the amount has yet to be worked out.

“We are also requesting for findings to be made public,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The developer of the wholesale complex where part of the road near the San Peng flats caved in on Saturday has agreed to compensate traders affected by the incident.

During a meeting with City Hall officials and traders yesterday, developer Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer Yee Ia Howe said this was because the 45 hawkers at the nearby Lorong Merlimau and 196 stall owners at Jalan Merlimau market were unable to carry on with their businesses following the cave-in.

“According to reports by our consultant engineer, the buildings in the surrounding area are safe and the traders at the market should be able to resume business,” he said.

City Hall deputy director-general Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said the market traders would operate as usual from today. (july 28)


“We will give the developer the full list of hawkers and market traders to enable the developer to compensate them.”

He said the 45 hawkers would be relocated within three days to an empty space nearby, adding that the authorities were currently preparing the lots.

“Meanwhile, the affected families at our quarters in Jalan Gelugor would be given options on whether to move to empty units at the San Peng flats or City Hall flats in Kampung Muhibbah in Puchong.

“The Public Works Department will handle the relocation of the other evacuated families who were living at its quarters.” said Mohd Amin Nordin.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said his ministry, through its foundation, would give RM500 to each of the affected families.

Residents in the area had a shock about 6.30pm on Saturday when part of Lorong Gelugor, which is near Jalan San Peng, caved in. Residents from 22 units of PWD and City Hall quarters were evacuated.
None of the houses collapsed although cracks appeared in some of them.

Yee said remedial work was expected to take three months and would include soil work and the repair of the damaged pipe, which was found to be the main cause of the incident.

“The piling work at our construction site produces vibration and the leakage of the pipe contributed to the built-up pressure which caused the cave-in.

“The repair work will take about three months before we can proceed with the project,” he said.

Meanwhile, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) corporate communications and public affairs general manager Abdul Halem Mat Som said in a statement that the cave-in has investigations revealed that the damaged pipe was due to soil erosion, caused water disruption to 70 houses at the PWD and City Hall quarters on Saturday night.

“We had placed three water tanks for temporary supply while carrying out water supply diversion from other pipes.

“This was completed the same day at 9pm. Residents were able to get back their water supply a few hours later,” he said, adding that the damaged pipe had actually been replaced by the developer a month ago.

The PWD is preparing a report on the cause of the incident while the developer had been issued a stop-work order.

KUALA LUMPUR City Hall has rejected the consultant’s report submitted by the developer of the seven-storey garment warehouse in Jalan San Peng near the location of the cave-in that happened on Saturday because it was not detailed enough.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail said it was unacceptable that no reason was given as to the cause of the Saturday cave-in.

“All we have now are speculations of what transpired at the site. Some say a burst pipe was the reason that resulted in water pressure increasing and there is also talk that the contiguous bored pile broke.

“If we can’t identify the problem, then how can we fix it?” Fuad asked.

“I will not accept this report and, until I get details as to what happened that day, the stop-work order stays,” he added.

The mayor added that the developer had been given 10 days to come up with a more detailed report and specifics as to what happened as well as offer solutions to rectify the problem.

Fuad stressed that City Hall would not compromise on the safety of the residents.

“We want data on soil movements not just at the project site but also the entire area,” he said.

“The developer gave a guarantee that the area is safe, but I cannot accept that when people’s live are at risk,” Fuad said.

The mayor also said City Hall had hired an independent engineering consultant to study the possibilities of what had caused the cave-in.

Fuad added that instruments such as the inclinometer and piezometer would be placed throughout the area to study the impact of soil movements.

Meanwhile, project developer Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd said it would adhere to the mayor’s request and provide a more detailed report.

“We fully support and understand his concerns as public safety is our priority, too,” Kenanga Wholesale City managing director Bernard Bong said.

“There is no issue here and a detailed report will be submitted as soon as possible,” Bong added.

KUALA LUMPUR: The developer of the wholesale complex where the road cave-in occurred said a more detailed report would be submitted to City Hall.

Kenanga Wholesale City Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer Yee Ia Howe confirmed at the site yesterday that another report would be handed to City Hall's public works department today.

"The first report which was rejected by City Hall was done in haste as we were rushing and had only one day to prepare it after the incident on Saturday evening. We will submit a new report today and it will be followed by a more detailed report within 10 days.

"We are giving our fullest cooperation to City Hall and we don't have anything to hide. We may be partly responsible but we have to wait for the outcome of the report."


Federal Territories Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, who was also at the site, said further action would only be decided after City Hall's independent consultant engineer had looked at the developer's reports.

Raja Nong Chik had earlier distributed aid amounting to RM800 to each of the 20 families staying at the City Hall and Public Works Department's quarters at Lorong Gelugor.

Out of the RM800, RM500 of the contribution was from the Federal Territories Foundation while the rest was from City Hall.

Housewife Noraini Ramli, 46, whose husband is a general worker of PWD, said she was still waiting to be given a new place.

"We are staying at a hotel in Sungei Besi, but I still come here during the day to cook as our children are attending school here. Our unit is not badly affected as some of the others," she said.
