no problem seeing Auckland on the list, but where's Sydney, The Gold Coast or Queenstown? maybe they come in at 11th, 12th & 13th place, but it really doesn't matter in which order on a list they come each one has it's own style...cheers

Having spent several years in the confines of Wellington, I can assure you that Auckland's like a hive of activity compared to that little enclosed space, made up almost entirely of Cuba Street and Courtenay Place. Ss for the "atmosphere" of Wellington's nightlife, well, if you enjoy wannabe hipster kids and trashy teenage girls and guys spewing their guts out and all of the associated aggression, then sure Wellington's a real hub of atmosphere. Interestingly, Wellington's urban bars and cafes are extremely inward-oriented, in that on a warm, balmy night (admittedly rare/non-existent), you don't have many options for being outside. Auckland's graced by a waterfront that is surprisingly accessible (the Wellington waterfront is a barren, concrete wasteland, for the most part, detached from the city) and even its other centres for nightlife (Ponsonby, Parnell, K Road, inner-city, even Freeman's Bay) have a fair bit of outdoorsy-ness to them. So yeah, I'd definitely rate Auckland's nightlife. What would be good is if they can somehow create a transport system between the various party areas. I suppose the Link is the obvious answer, but it has its limitations. Oh and those that usually describe Auckland as unsafe are usually referring to its more multicultural element, which a lot fo the rest of the country (particularly Wellingtonians, for some reason) is uncomfortable about. they seem to associate that type of mix as unsafe, which says more about their provincial mentality, in my opinion. |

Auckland internationally is definitely a safe city. Its highly regarded as a multiethnic city with a few racial problems. You might get the odd assult, but nothing serious compared to being raped or killed like in some cities and countries in africa, america and asia.

Ironbank is fantastic, let's hope this teaches developers to lift their game a little in the city.

Sydney,
Get 'yo ass back on Skyscraper City. While you can be a bit of an old woman (as we all can), your photogaphy, coupled with your honesty & your feedback, IMO, makes the Auckland forum. Especially the photography. As someone who doesn't know you from Adam, you have a real, real talent & Auckland could do worse than have someone like you engaged on mapping out the future of the city. |

Assuming those beaches are on the North Island -is the water warm enough to swim in during the S. Hemisphere summer?

NZ's northern North Island is almost sub-tropical. It's certainly warm enough.

This thread shows why I love Auckland (and NZ).
These beaches are in the Auckland region, which is in the North Island. The water is warm enough to swim in in summer in both the north and south islands, IMO. |
