Great shots rober2010, you have a good eye. If you ever get a chance, I would like to see some your shots of the new Biscayne from the Pac to 50 Biscayne.

Nice photos, thanks! Really like some of those photos showing the older buildings along the river, definitely refreshing.

Really nice job and a good look at some areas not usually seen in photo threads. The "Scottish Rite" building in the 3rd from last photo is an old Masonic Temple with a long history. Looks like it needs some TLC and they really should replace that tattered flag in front---that's pretty bad.

A little Miami River trivia: Did you know the river once had "rapids?" It's true. We're not talking white water or anything (obviously) but in its original state the river once descended a few feet as it passed over the limestone ridge out near present-day 27th Avenue, creating a small area of rushing water and eddys that was a minor tourist attraction in the early part of the last century.

Wow, definitely did not know that. I love hearing about stuff like that, thanks.

There's not much info or photos about it on the net but here's a link if you'd like to learn more about the "rapids." http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/groups/mrc/river3.htm

On the rapids removal:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_River_(Florida)
Quote:
Modification of the river began in earnest with the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway in Miami in 1896. There was much dredging and filling along the river. The rapids at the head of the South Fork were removed in 1908. From 1909 to 1912, the Miami Canal was dug, bypassing the rapids at the head of the North Fork.

The real Miami River began where the "rapids" were around 27th Avenue---everything to the west of there was the Everglades and water from the swamp would crest over the limestone ridge at low points along it and create a few small (3-4 miles in length) rivers to the coast, such as the Miami and Arch Creek. The vast majority of Everglades fresh water simply spilled southward into Florida Bay.

What you see today as the "Miami River" anywhere west of 27th is all man-made.

Was the Brisas Del Rio project ever built that was north of 22nd Avenue on the Miami River ? Love the shot of the new condominiums east of the Metrorail on the river.

The last two are absolutely great.

Not to get demanding here but since we have all these great photograghers does anyone plan on shooting the breakdown of the Orange Bowl? That gorgeous old girl that was SO important to Miami is about to be smashed into pieces and it would be great to have a photographic restrospective of it.

I would like to see the Miami River take on the appearance of the waterways in Fort Lauderdale.I know there is alot of marine industry along the river, but it would be nice to see beautiful condos and homes along a beautiful lit river with restaurants and other establishments all up and down the whole river.
