SEVILLE | Torre CajaSol | 178 m | 40 fl | U/C

Torre CajaSol.
Basic data.
Architect: Cesar Pelli (web site).
Height: 178.2 meters
Floors: 40 on grazing and 3 underground
Form: elliptic
Lifts: 8
Total area: 59,000 sq metres
Facade of glass and steel with wooden lamas.

CajaSol Tower, in Seville, the capital of Andalusia in Spain, will be the first skyscraper in the city. This tower will have a total height of 178.2 meters. The tower has been projected with elliptical plant, 40 floors and 3 underground floors. Built of reinforced concrete, steel and glass facade, and protected from the sun with reconstituyed wooden lamas, this building will be a new landmark of modern Seville and Andalusia.

In Seville, are carrying out high-level architecture, for which it has participated leading architects both domestic and international.

They were called 5 large international studies to compete in a contest of ideas, where the main requirement was that the building should be a new landmark for the city, and preferably should bring together the building in a single volume in height.

Participants of the contest:
- Pelli Clarke Pelli, the argentine architect Cesar Pelli who won the contest with his 178 m tower.
- Arquitectonica, by the peruvian Bernardo Fort-Brescia, which was runner with a flat 216 m tower.
- FOA-Zaera, by the spanish Alejandro Zaera was third with a 187 m tower of ceramic.
- Arata Isozaki, with 225m. tower.
- Valode & Priste, with 120m. tower.

The tower is located on the Island of Cartuja, along with the Triana district, and the site of the Expo 92 Seville. On the island are located buildings at the University of Seville, headquarters of high-tech companies and other tertiary uses.

Design and construction

The tower will be completed in 2010 and with 40 floors, and structure of concrete and glass, will evoke a great torch lit at night. Pelli used an elliptical design at its base, putting the more narrow and thin side orientated to the eternal symbol of the city: La Giralda, the Renaissance tower. The tower size decreases gradually, according rises height. The tower will be located on an area of 2700 underground car parks and on the surface will be flanked by two commercial buildings 3 and 4 floors with undulating forms, which will house offices on the upper floors. These buildings will be confronted with each other, forming a typical "Seville street" in the middle, and two squres on the end. These buildings will be covered with a vegetative cover as an insulator for the heat of summer. At the top you will find a restaurant veranda and a winter garden open to the public and with direct input from the square.

More information can be found in Spanish, here.

CajaSol Tower will be the tallest building in the city, surpassing the Alamillo Bridge and the historical Giralda tower which, when it was built, was the highest tower in the world.

Nice design...! Still a pity that the design with the "wave" (Arquitectonica) wasn't the final building. Looked very good as well.

Hi Asterix! Great post friend!

Only a question:
Finally, the lamas will be made of ceramic rather than wood.

Will be the 6th skyscraper of Spain.

Regards!

Its a great project, I love it. But the project is not only the tower, all the area will be transformed. I hope to see it as soon as possible

The design competition was hard, ´cause this kind of building in this very old town is a brand new experience. This one, i think, is discreet and smart. Im agree whit it.

neighbours buildings by Gudalquivir river

Santiago Calatrava´s bridge "Puente del Alamillo" and "Puente de la Barqueta"

more than one thousen towers "Torre del Oro" y "Giralda"

Catedral de Sevilla and "La Giralda" tower, no more tallest building in town.....

This is true, guys. Thank you very much!

If you want we can recall the others projects submitted to the contest:

Arquitectonica (225 meters)

Isozaki (225 meters)

Alejandro Zaera (187 meters)

Valode & Pistre (120 meters)
(And 220m. antenna)

Arquitectonica was interesting but I still prefer the Pelli's proyect.

The design is fashionable, but a little too typical. However it's very nice for Seville.
Personally, preferred that project 'Arquitectonica'.

I also think Arquitectonica was the 'best' skyscraper proposal, but i'm sure Pelli's tower will fit much better in Seville skyline. Keep in mind this will be our very first +100m building.

I'd place Arquitectonica's one in city with a higher buildings density

The last proposal by Valode & Pistre was such a joke...
How can you even seriously 'offer' such an inane piece of s**t when you seem to consider yourself an architect?
