This bridge in Romania is cursed. All the time german cars driven by gypsyes are breaking down under it:

*for those who don't know: this is a typical hoax set up by this guys. They say that their car remained out of gas and ask you for help. After that... well... you get cheated.

** Maybe their car is also broken down on street view, but I'm too lazy to search for the exact location of this bridge

edit: I searched on Street View. They are not at that bridge, but few km south: http://goo.gl/maps/jLb91

Few years ago, until I heard about this hoax, I stopped at a similar situation in Hungary, near the border with Romania, I put down the window and asked the guy what was the problem. The discussion was something like:

Quote:
Me: What's the problem?
Him: I remained out of gasoline. Please help me with some liters of gasoline!
Me: I'm sorry, my car runs on diesel, I can't help you.
Him: Diesel is also good!
Me:

I heard of similar episodes in Italy, especially on rest areas of the A3 motorway in southern Italy: some guys ask you to stop to help them to change a tyre, then ran into your car (parked next to their and left open since you're there), steal the luggage and excape.
Other times they wait you entering the shop\restaurant and then they cut your tyres with a knife. You return to your car, start to drive and stop after few hundreds of meters because of flat tyres. Then, they offer to help you and, after stealing your luggage, run away!
I prefer to stop in front of Autogrills, near the entry point instead of behind, especially if it's night and my car is full of luggage.

There are several autogrills in which you can get a free coffee from 00.00 to 05.00. On the website autostrade.it you can see the rest areas that adhere to this promotion (Sosta Amica marked in orange) and rest areas in which you can have discount on self-service refill (Prezzo Amico marked in green)

Here the link

I was on my way to Salerno in my van with a load, and because I don't like sleeping in my van at service areas in southern Italy, I decided to stay overnight in a hotel. Found one at the Autogrill, went in, paid for my room and got my key. I then went outside to get my bag and laptop from the van, and as I was getting my stuff out a car pulled on the side of me. Two guys in suits showed me their police badges and started speaking to me in English. (I should have known by then, as I've never come across an English speaking Italian cop before) and said something about an English van spotted waving his gun around. Told them it wasn't me. Then they asked about counterfeit US dollars, and wanted to search my wallet. After that they've shaked my hand, and left. Upon paying for my meal at the buffet restaurant, I noticed 200€ was missing.

Too bad to lost money ,but it's not your fault. They are professionals.
But italians for you ?
When I was employee in express delivery 12- 15 years ago, the boss told us never to sleep below Firenze along roads, except into the customer area. And always have a look on the van to avoid any problems.
But some areas in GB, NL, or even France are not safe even if you sleep inside your van.
In southern France, employees of gas stations tell me to sleep in front of the shop, never in a dark place. I don't tell you which kind of people like to visit your vehicle, I will be charge with racism.
But newspapers show us the truth.

It's funny how you see everywhere electronic pannels with no driving when tired warnings, now if you respect this and take a nap, you risk getting robbed.

I take 15min naps quite often, but I park in front of the rest area main building, I didnt have any problems so far.

It happens in our job. Once I was on my way from Northampton to Oberhausen, and went to sleep in the back of my van just before Eindhoven. Woke up the next morning, and found that they cut the window out on the passenger door, and took my cigarettes and some Czech and Polish money. A major hub to eastern Europe, the police said, so it happens a lot.

My colleague got robbed by a Romanian gang just outside Vienna.

Another colleague went to sleep in the back of his van outside Bordeaux, and woke up with a splitting headache and all of his belongings taken. They've slid a tube into the van, and gassed him.

That's common along the motorways, gangs inject gas into camper vehicles.

Gas detectors are pretty much standard feature in all top of the line campers nowadays.

I remember a few years ago on the news a german family sleeped over night in their camper along the motorway E6 in Sweden. The next morning they woke up and all their valuables were gone, the theifs had gassed the camper.

The family didnt expect this to happen in safe Sweden were they had spent the last 10 years of their summer holidays camping.

These gangs are on tour especially in the summertime. I also have slept in my car in various places, but now when I read about this and that its becomming more usual I will stay in a camping next time not along the motorway.

I've been driving and sleeping through Europe in a van nonstop for 10 years, and I only had these two incidents. Don't go all health and safety on yourself now...

Those that use gas aren't just thieves but real criminals. They may kill their victims, maybe for a couple of hundreds €s. They should be jailed for life.

A quote I've read on Facebook recently:

"When I was kid you never had to say don't try this at home. We weren't complete morons back then. "
