Same as Czechoslovakia. We had Tuzex shops with western products. My grandparents had Saab and Simca/Chrysler from Tuzex Huge problem was servicing. The only authorised service for western cars was in Prague and it's far away from Košice. So they were forced to service car in Budapest.

Later, in the end of 1980es, were some fragments glasnost & perestroika implemented in Czechoslovakia but in Hungary it was much more notable. In 1987 started some chain stores - some brands were formally outsourced from Tuzex (for example United Colors of Benneton). In 1988 it was allowed to assume management (not property) of existing news-stands or public toilets by "self-employers".

Filthy capitalism has its flaws, but still it's nice one doesn't have to travel to Italy or Austria to buy a pair of jeans. Or decadent luxury things like chocolate or banana!

<- not in communism

Talking about period of communism, there's a nice museum in Hodmezovasarhely in Hungary called "Point of Remembrance" dedicated to communism period in Hungary:

That is exactly how my father escaped out of Romania in the 80's. Back then Yugoslavia was the gateway to the promised land.

LOL. I still remember the first time I had a banana when I was a kid. Back then having bananas was an achievement.

This is roughly my bargaining place

Some Turkish guy called me and said it's to expensive. Thing is I really put some money in it after buying it, it had some problems, but I didn't want to sell it before it runs really well. After I picked it up from service this week I felt even a little sorry for having to sell it, it has a very nice drive feeling when accelerating.

Today I will probably do my last roadtrip with it I'm heading for Coburg in half an hour.

My father-in-law has a A4 B5 1.9TDI from 1999 with more than 350000kms. The father of my best friend has another from 2001 with 2001. Both of them in deep Blue.

In my neighbourhood, here in Madrid, I count another 5 on my street, 3 of then in deep blue.

And another two A4 B5 Avant from 1997 and 1999. All of then 1.9TDI (116ps).

Also, my frist car was a A4 B5 1.8t Quattro (150ps) from late 2001.

10 A4.

Anyway, 1.9TDI is probably the most common engine of all Madrid: just only see the underground garage were i park my peterwagen, from at least 200 cars I count more than 40 1.9 TDI (Leon, Ibiza, Octavia, Superb, Toledo, Passat…)

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

Due to Photobucket f*cking up, most images won't be visibile in my old posts. If you need anything specific, please write me.

Don't leave your car with new expensive alloy rims in Bucharest. This can happen:

But Gordon Bennett is an expression from Only Fools and Horses that mostly British people are familiar with. (cockney Del Boy says it instead of goddamned)
