Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

Due to Photobucket f*cking up, most images won't be visibile in my old posts. If you need anything specific, please write me.

A question to our Italian colleagues: is there a website like bahn.de for train information. bahn.de gives good results I think but doesn't know the prices. I want to find info's about trains in the Venice area, for example ftom/to Preganziol/Treviso and from/to Padova.

Thanks!

3,500 people held a street parade in Trieste in favour of the independence of the Free Territory of Trieste from Italy. The movement "Trieste Libera" wants to make Trieste province a sort of microstate with fiscal privileges.
After Sicily in the 40s, Sudtirol in the 60s, Padania in the 90s, Italy seems still home of bullshit independentist movements.

Aparently UN officials complained because the use of the UN flag is forbidden outside official contexts.

In real life, electronic toll collection was first introduced in Bergen, Norway in 1986, and well into the 21th century many countries still struggle to implement it.

Dredging up dim memories of my mother's 1948 world atlas, was Trieste independent at that time, or am I imagining it?

Yup, from 1947 to 1954.
However it was independent only de jure because the facto there were two states: the A zone, under the British-American occupation and the B zone under Yugoslav occupation. There were border contriols between Italy and A zone and between A zone and B zone.
Here a 1952 map:

Trieste was recognized as a fully independent state back then and it was one of the receiver of Marshal plan funds. In 1954 with the London memorandum it was split between Italy and Yugoslavia. This agreement was confirmed with the Osimo treaty in 1975. However UN never dissolved it formally: this fact, practically irrelevant, allows independists to still claim the autonomy of Trieste from Italy.

There's no independence movement here.

Like Catalonia right now. I'm sure that bullshit will cease after the current crisis is gone.
