Me too, last year I didn't ski at all (except one day in October) because of knee injury. This year I'll ski but with not such power as in previous years. Currently there is not much snow on skislopes around so I'm waiting for some more snow.

Would you like some of ours? (We've had three small snowstorms in a week, another expected tomorrow.)

I used to ski a lot when I was younger. Now everytime I see a mountain covered in snow all I can think of is... snowshoes!

Sure, just deliver it.
I need at least one meter in the mountains.

I said "small" snowstorms. Just enough to be annoying, particularly when they hit in the morning rush hour, as they've been tending to do.

Actually, today's was an underperformer. Less than expected and out of here earlier than expected.

We might have a meter for you if this keeps up at the current rate for about three more weeks. Although we'd need to do something to prevent it melting when it warms up [] later this week.

Yes they were indeed. I remember TV transmissions very well, back in December 1989, and will never forget that unpleasant word "securitate".

Dark

The winter solstice happens tomorrow at 17:11 UTC time.

At the latitude of Helsinki, the length of the day today is 5 hours 50 minutes (measured from sunrise to sunset). In the beginning of the month, it was 6 hours 20 minutes. The December is typically cloudy and there is not too much sunshine. Yesterday, the Meteorological institute reported this December being the most sunny since last 8 years: During the first 18 days, the Sun was visible for 15 hours in Helsinki. To compare: last December, there was sunshine for 24 minutes during the whole month.

Waiting for summer.

Happy winter solstice, everyone!

Fun fact few people know: winter solstice is the shortest day in the year, but not the day where sunrise comes the latest or/and sunset comes the earliest. In Rome, for istance, the day when sunrise happens the latest is January 1st, while the day when sunset happens the earliest is December 8th.

I bore people with that fun fact every year. I can even explain it on a good day. (It's explained well in a book I read some years back about the origins of the modern Western calendar.)

Jewish calendars (I have one on my wall at work, at a Jewish social services organization) show the appropriate time for lighting Sabbath candles on Fridays: candle-lighting today is three minutes later than it was on December 6.

Luckily, the days will get longer from now on. This time of the year is disastrous for outdoor photography. Even at noon the angle of the sun is very low.

Sunrise is at 8:43 a.m. and sunset is at 4:30 p.m. Not as bad as further north(east) in this timezone. Sunlight lasts 7 hours and 47 minutes today.

8:43! I'm already at work (with occasional forum breaks...) by then. Going home in the dark's bad enough. Going to work in it...?

Latest sunrise gets at this latitude is about 7:30. Earliest sunset about 4:35. And Philadelphia's basically on the meridian for this time zone - 75 degrees west - it passes three or four miles east of downtown.
