Well, as usual, I need a small help with the English. What is correct and what not?

It has been a while since I met her.
It has been a while since I have met her.
It has been a while since I had met her.

Thanks. I guess the third one due to ensuring the sequence of tenses.

No, the first one is correct.

....

Short answer: it's "met."

But as I think about it more carefully, "have met" isn't quite wrong, but it doesn't mean the same thing and would be a little unusual.

It's been a while since I met her = ...since I met her for the first time (meaning, I've known her for a while).

It's been a while since I have met her = ...the last time I saw her was a while ago. Although "since I've seen her" would be more usual than "...I've met her." (A sentence like "It's been a while since I've met her at that Starbucks..." would be a completely normal way of saying I used to run into her there a lot but not lately.)

Anyhow, I just ate at an "Au Pain Quotidien" in Philadelphia, where the salt and pepper on the table were labeled in three languages, including Dutch. ("grijs zeezout" and "zwarte peperbollen.")

I was also browsing the Wikipedia, and I discovered that the Yellow river went through some really crazy course changes, even as recently as 1897. Currently its mouth is in Northern Shandong, but before its latest course change it took a totally different route past Lankao (Eastern Henan), arriving at the East China sea in Northern Jiangsu. And it switched courses several times in recorded history!!! Compared to this, the Isonzo river course changes I quoted last month are nothing.

For those who understand French, just came across this, which reminded me of Bogdy's map, although its more provocative*:

http://s.llb.be/image/06/530ee95435709867e407ba06.jpg

Article about it: http://www.lalibre.be/light/insolite...709867e407b9b4

*and there's even an anti-American element to it, so I'm included in the targets. (I'm an overweight burger-eater, it would appear. :-) )

Okay, what thread did the pronunciation of Lesotho come up on? There was a video where everyone was trying to identify the accent. I haven't listened to it yet and thought I'd do it now, but I can't find it....

Thanks, but I've already checked there. Is it longer ago than I thought?

(I'll look again.)

EDIT: Found it. (My memory was faulty - I remembered it being at the top of a page....)

And the accent's Irish, I think.

In International Border Crossings, Keoki just informed me that in another video the guy says he's Scottish.

I always have trouble with those two, and I don't try to imitate them any more because if I try either of them it comes out sounding like the other....

Winter 2014 has been one of the mildest on record in the Netherlands. The meteorological winter had an average temperature of +6.0 C, while +3.4 C is the average (1981-2010). Only winter 2007 was warmer, while it is a tie with winter 1990.

Interestingly, there was not a single day with a mean temperature below freezing in De Bilt, the official "national" weather station in central Netherlands. The coastal city of Vlissingen did not record any frost at all which is highly unusual. The majority of the Netherlands also received no snow at all, only the far northeast had a few days with snow. The average winter has 25 days with snow accumulation. The main cause was the near-constant airflow from the west and southwest, which also caused the flooding in the United Kingdom. The Netherlands received normal precipitation though.

The Netherlands has an oceanic climate, which means winters are generally mild, but usually the winter features a few cold spells, with temperatures to -15 C not being uncommon.

6 to 12 inches (15-30 cm) of snow expected here Sunday night and Monday.

This winter was the hottest one I can remember in my region (western Romania). We had just a few snowflakes 2 times, and that's all. No problems with road traffic because even when it snowed, the snow melted quickly because of traffic (maybe they also sprayed some salt on the roads).

Anyway, very mild winter compared to last year for example.

In most of Spain this winter was among the wettest we ever had. Ironically, the Valencian community just received only 1/4 of average precipitation, so that part is now in drought status.
