I'm thinking more about emergencies. Due to my hospitalization I spent a lot of time at the phone (doctors, parents, etc), so I think it's best not to run out of minutes while immobilized in a bed.

Btw. it is interesting that every country has its own packages and tariffs. I've recently visited sites of one-not-named-magenta-operator in several countries and the packages were completely different.

Whilst roaming for calls and texts are no longer so expensive because of EU regulation, data roaming is still generally expensive. However, there is a good deal from Orange in Spain where you can get 100 MB for 1 euro for 24 hours across the whole EU, plus Norway and Iceland. Unlike most data roaming offers, which put you onto normal roaming rates when you exceed the limit, you just pay an extra euro for each extra 100 MB. The SIM cards are available on eBay from various Spanish vendors:

Dutch plans are much more expensive. I pay € 24.50 per month for 500 MB at 4G speed and 0 minutes. (I practically never call anymore, and I still have a landline connection). But the phone is free (included in the monthly rate). If you exceed the 500 MB limit you don't have to pay more, but your speed is reduced.

I've got pretty nice package from T-mobile. Pay 25 € monthly and the package includes:

- unlimited SMS, MMSs
- unlimited calls to numbers registered within T-mobile
- 500 MB of mobile packet data/month. If I exceed the limit, it won't be extra charged, but the download speed will decrease rapidly. It happened me once when my router got broken down. But it was indeed incredibly slooow..

For people like me who visits the Netherlands several times a year but only one or two days at a time, I find that *bliep is a good solution as they offer unlimited data for 0.50 euros a day for low speed internet and 1 euro a day for unlimited internet up to 3.6 Mbps (with a 2 GB monthly limit). The credit doesn't expire as long as I use it once every 6 months, unlike some other providers. The only drawback is that they use the T-mobile network which doesn't have as good coverage in rural areas as the other networks.

Which country is that from and what countries can you roam in using those rates?

My monthly plan from Vodafone is

- 200 minutes
- 200 sms
- 1 GB data

for 9.9€.

I'm ok with data and sms (hardly use them anymore), but I'm seeking a plan with more minutes.

Often the best deals for calling/SMS and data are from different providers, so that is where a dual SIM phone is useful. Or you could use a mobile router for data. For my UK domestic use, I use Orange for calls/texts, as I have an Orange Cash debit card which gives free calls/texts if you use the debit card for shopping. You only need to spend 200 GBP per month on the card to get 150 texts and 20 minutes of calls per month, which is enough for me.

http://cash.orange.co.uk/benefits/

For data, I get EE SIM cards off eBay or Amazon. The current best deal is 6GB of 4G for 90 days for 16.77 GBP.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/6GB-Pay-Mobi.../dp/B00FSDAMT8

You can top up when the SIM cards expire, but it is cheaper to buy another SIM card from Amazon/eBay.

400 minutes' call
1000 SMS
2 GB internet
Unlimited calls to one number (my boyfriend)

For 10 euro/month. It's so convenient that they've stopped making such offer! I still have it because they can't cancel it

Sorry, you got a very expensive deal.

I pay just 10 Euro more and I get 10GB. One-year contract. Comes with no phone, but it is very economical since I bought a decent unlocked 4G phone for € 200... That is a T-Mobile plan (SIM-only).

I have a question for the engineers on this thread: how much can you actually tweak the performance, interface and response of a new car (model 2012 onwards, let say) with proper "jailbreak" software you can plug to override its normal setup on various controls (fuel injection, ventilation, numerous sensors for rain, temperature etc, door and window controls, EDS etc)?

This is very good. I definitely weaned from writing SMS and MMS since there has been lots of free of charge alternatives.

That depends if you count the inclusion of a recent model smartphone as part of the deal. € 24.50 for data alone is expensive, but when it includes a phone for 'free', it isn't that expensive.

Some quote figures of € 10 per month, which seems very cheap, but if you have to buy a phone separately, it isn't that cheap.

Rates have skyrocketed in the Netherlands since 2010 or so. I remember having 'unlimited 3G data' for € 2.50 (!) per month with my first smartphone. They scrapped all those cheap data plans when people started using mobile internet a lot.

I think +- 25 € with good phone included is a good deal

Not realistically to improve it though, except maybe on a diesel where you can make it "roll coal" dumping too much fuel to go faster

almost anything related to dynamic response is physical in nature (steering brakes, suspension) so you need to change parts, unless you have some kind of adaptive / reactive shock absorbers on your car.
