I have red several reports in 2014 about Czech customs police inspecting even the fuel tank. They have been after drivers tanking heating oil (i.e. colored diesel) in Germany. There have been multiple cases when they found it. Either in bigger quantities or just in the fuel tank.

There's indeed a big tax leak potential when you compare the different taxes on the agriculture diesel, heating oil and normal diesel.

It is possible to buy heating oil in Germany at the gas stations, while it is not so easy to get it in the CZ.

ha-ha, I remember once my dad getting on I-90 W when wanting to just stay on 87 on that thing once, was like a 20 mile detour What a crappy road setup that is, so inconvenient AND you have to pay for it! And of course the always-friendly demeanor of NY Thruway staff "take this, **** you"

Anyway I guess... last night I was doing better things

Albany, NY has such weird road setup. In Canada for example a 4-level stack interchange is rare and only at really big road interchanges, like say Hwy 407 at Hwy 400 in Toronto.

But look at US-9 at I-90 in Albany, a 2-lane cowpath / city street turns into that giant monster, LOL

In Finland, LPG is not used as motor vehicle fuel, and consequently, it is not available even for the tourists' vehicles.

Anyways, LGP is a nonsense. In France it has been sold during last decades as a "residue" from petrol industry that would be wasted if not used! From this false informations, it has been almost completly "tax-free" in France, and it still very very lightly taxed now... (10€cent/Kg or 5€cent/L... compared to 60€cent/L for the gasoline in France).

And also it's not really cleaner than gasoline now (we're not in 1970 when it has been lauched, where gasoline was high in sulfur and lead! Now gasolines are lead-free...). And also it is not interresting about CO2 emissions as most of LPG cars are emiting more CO2/km than diesels cars...

So LPG has a very strange situation, protected by oil compagnies, by states from taxes (even if it not understandable)...

I wonder if that interchange was intended to be an Interstate/Interstate interchange (say that ten times fast). There was, eons ago, a proposed I-687, which if memory serves would have run from about there out to 87 roughly paralleling NY 5.

University fraternities and sororities always, for some reason, take Greek letters (usually if not always three of them) as their names.

That may not exist over there....

I think fraternities are almost unheard of in Europe... They are certainly so in Italy. I am still unsure what is their purpose and who funds them...

So am I, actually. My university only had one, and it was in a house off-campus and not officially recognized. Which may be due (I went to a Jesuit university) to the church's historic antipathy to "secret societies."

Official PR-laden answer: "they are affinity clubs that provide students with the opportunity to, while following a college program, form a tight community of like-minded people, sharing goals, forging friendships and professional networks that last a lifetime and socializing"

Actual answer in most cases: Greek houses are a mix of party centrals and closed societies aimed at rewarding stereotype confirmation and establishing pecking order on school campuses, thereby usually attracting the type of people that longs for acceptance.

-------------

As for funding: they are funded with membership fees, donations from former members and, sometimes, subsidization from universities (like free use of a building on campus).

Sounds about right. (National "umbrella" organizations are probably a source of funding to local houses as well, although they may just do the fundraising and channel the donations.)

I wouldn't underestimate the importance of the professional networking. I'd guess that's worth something to members long after college; even provides them an "in" with members of the same fraternity from other universities, or whom they didn't know themselves because they were too far apart in age....

I'm allergic to this kind of "forced allegiance" to somebody just because you were in the same fraternity. It's something I'll never understand or endorse.

That's probably why I'm still a nobody in academy

I hear you...

I sometimes wonder where I'd be now if I'd been good at that sort of game-playing.

But I'm usually philosophical about that. I don't make as much as I'd like but I have low stress and good people to work with. (The reason I say "usually" is because at the moment I'm campaigning for a promotion. Which does require a little bit of politicking. And it is a game, and I can be detached enough to recognize that even as I'm doing it.)
