How does engine brake work in modern automatic cars? I mean, in a mountainous area, a quite steep slope, with manual transmission I take the 2nd gear. What shall I do if I drive an automatic?

Modern automatic cars (mid 90ies+) usually shift automatically to a lower gear. But even if the car doesn't do so, you can do it manually. (There's something like a +/- shift gate or a shift gate with 4-3-2-(1))

That is one of the oldest tunnels in Gardesana road. The more you go north, the newer they are.

I have noticed that white colour has become very popular among new cars, especially those expensive ones. I find this strange, since white colour used to be cheapest version of some cars.

Not just white, black and all gray variants are highly prevalent - if I look onto shopping center parking there are at most 15% colored cars.
When I bought my car (Honda Accord) I asked salesman at used car dealer why was my car so cheap. He said there are four things about my car that significantly lower used car price:
1 - it is not German
2 - it is not diesel
3 - it's automatic
4 - it is red

The trade-off is not exactly like that. Up to the very recent past (Euro-4), gas engines polluted a lot more. It was literally a matter of picking your poison. Older (mid-1990s and earlier) diesel engines were cleaner than their gas equivalents once particulate filters became the norm.

In any case, electric cars will make the debate moot. I personally believe there is a good chance that the majority of new cars sold in Europe, USA and developed countries will be electric as soon as 2022-2025, and from there one the fleet will be rapidly replaced. Ending tailpipe emissions is just too good of a hook to pass. Such cars are also incredibly quiet ate lower speeds (city traffic), where wind displacement noise is far lower than engine running noise.
