And, of course, the "associated themselves" argument only works for the original 13. (And a couple of others, like Texas, that had independent existence before they joined the Union.) I'm surprised I missed that last night, because I've always thought the Southern "logic" that, say, Mississippi or Arkansas, when they seceded in 1861, were just resuming their independence was ridiculous. I must have been tired.

I agree. I was snarking a bit.
But I have seen maps made in, well, the Western Hemisphere that do just that: put us in the middle and split Eurasia.
[thinking-out-loud mode on] Do maps published in China or Japan put Eurasia on the left...well, they'd still have the middle of the map in the Pacific somewhere unless they split the Americas down the middle, which would look a bit silly since they're so vertical, but it would get themselves close to the center.[off]

Actually, I was sort of joking. Liberty Island, Ellis Island...all islands in New York Harbor on the New Jersey side of the line are in fact enclaves of New York State (and New York City) but it's a sore point with New Jerseyans. (I believe the issue actually went to the Supreme Court.) When New York started using pictures of the Statue of Liberty on its license plates about 30 years ago, I remember New Jerseyans joking that we should use Niagara Falls. (Which is of course nowhere near New Jersey.)

Typically, the most important areas are put close to the center of the map. What is important, depends on the purpose of the map. It seldom is about politics or a conspiracy.

Sometimes, the accuracy of the map is not the key thing. This is one of my favorites:

I was sort of thinking that.... (I mean about countries like Belgium.)
But I didn't want to open a can of worms.

Isn't there some sort of celebration of the EU in Brussels about that time of year? Open houses at EU offices and so on?

Do you mean this? http://www.euopenhouse.org/

Anyway. I would adopt the 1st of May for this EU wide holiday. Almost all countries in the EU have it as a public holiday. Its great time of the year and tit would mean one more free day in the Netherlands .

But May 1st has a specific meaning. Tacking a different meaning onto it does a disservice to that, I think.
Not that it's any of my business....

Actually, 1st of May celebrations originated from the USA.

I don't think either that this is a good date, because it's very deeply related to Socialism/Communism/Soviet Union and the Left - not "neutral".

Moreover, not every country has 1st of May "free", and if it has it, it won't add another public holiday day.

I was aware of it just because it's my birthday.
But it isn't actually celebrated by people, except maybe within EU institutions. Actually, most people have never heard of it. Nothing compared to 4th July in the USA, 25th April in Italy, 14th July in France, etc..., that are widely observed by the general population.

They did? (I'm not doubting you; I just didn't know that.) We now celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday in September (Canada does as well). May 1st has no particular significance here any more. (I think Catholics...more in the past than today...observed May as a month to honor Mary and there were some sort of celebrations on the 1st, and May 1st has some sort of folkloric significance in England....)

Then, Canadians would complain: "Hey Yankees, Niagara falls are our!"
(like Italians and French fight over Mont Blanc).

Anschluss alarm.

Well I meant the May 1st. Its a well known holiday in Europe and it would really also go to the roods of the European movement. Further on, there are many deep historical folk events that are associated with this time of the year in Europe across various countries.

Wow, Santiago, Chile has imagery in Google Earth dated 22 February 2016. That's just over a week old.

They can complain all they want, the Liberty license plates were by far the best issued by NYS, maybe in the world:

I always feel bad for the suckers I see driving on those hideous blue-yellow things they have now... at least I have a liberty plate on the wall in my home office, next to my Czech one (from Praha...)

My favorite of all time may have been the California "sunset" plate.
Which I'm too lazy to hunt for now.

P.S. The so-called "Canadian" falls are actually half ours. :-P
