That's unfortunate. Time to replace the battery perhaps? You'd think it should last longer, unless it took you forever to change the tire.

@spinoza
how long have you been in sos lane? i left my headlights on 2 weeks ago in front of my house (although i have that ding-dong sound, but it is obviously not annoying enough), but whole day, so battery went out, but it is only 1 year old, so i fullfilled it.

btw in which part of Sardinia you are?

It took me only 10/15 minutes to change the tire so yes, maybe it's time to change the battery. Truth be told, I think it is time to change car.

I'm in Siniscola, 50 km south of Olbia.

Are you hiking in Sardinia as well? You are always hiking wherever you travel.

I think that car batteries should be completely overhauled. No more reason to have filthy lead-acid batteries, they should all be lithium-ion or nickel-cadmium ones.

Of course I'm going to hike: in a couple of days I will go to Punta La Marmora, highest point in Sardinia, and then to some beaches only reachable by hiking trails. A mountain in Siniscola also seems nice, I will see if there are hiking trails.

yes definitely battery issue, it must handle with at least 3 hours turned off car with lights on with no consequences.

about Sardegna - the best plase where you are. you are probably going to Golfo Orosei - i so eny you! i was only at southernmost point of the gulf at Sa Pedra Longa (the last point you can access by car from south before Cala Gonone), i didn't have enough time to rent some boat to take us to inner gulf.

Once I forgot the lights on for around one hour and the battery wasn't fully discharged (it was new). If your lasted only 10-15 minutes, it's better to replace it.

Car battery can die without previous notice. I had a bad experience: it worked normally, until next time I wanted to start, and it was dead. Although it was 5 years old.

I think the battery will have to wait. I still have to find a tire shop that agrees in selling me one new tire instead of two (my car has the little spare tire instead of the regular one)...

They don't sell one tire? Strange...
I had one tire damaged and the service just changed that one without problems...

It should have remained working unless you had not the high beams on. Perhaps the battery was already thru expiration.

BTW I suspect Greeks that they don't know anything about the 'shape of an intersection' sign an do all with straight main road. Today I drove on national road with classic L-turn, but the main (straight) direction ended at beach. I also had to give way to road that ended as a dead end

A typical battery of 55 Ah 12 V has 660 Wh capacity, and about a half of it can be used. It is usually safe to have 2x55 W headlamps on for 1-2 hours and still able start the engine. A good smart charger is able to restore a battery in a bad condition, but the restored battery does not last forever.

I am afraid it is not that straightforward. There are number of things to consider:

- Crank power. A lead-acid battery is able to output high crank power. Starting a fuel engine may need 200-800 amperes for a while, and a lithium-ion battery capable on that is very expensive.
- Price per capacity. Lead batteries are much cheaper per capacity than Li-Ion batteries.
- Safety. Li-Ion batteries need a complex electronics to charge and monitoring. Battery may explode or get fire if not carefully monitored.
- Temperature. The operational temperature range of consumer-class Li-Ion batteries is limited. Especially, the charging might be impossible if the temperature drops below the freezing point. This makes the business case somewhat challenging in cold areas.
- Availability of Lithium. The known lithium reserves are not enough to equip all cars with a Li-Ion batteries
- Recycling. Most of the lead-acid battery is recyclable. Because a Li-Ion battery is much more complicated, the recycling is complicated, too, and provides with a much weaker benefit to cost ratio.

I once left my old car (2007 Opel Meriva) with the radio playing and the interior lights on for the whole night (~8hrs) and the battery wasn't dead even in the morning. It was the same one that was fitted in factory and I had never changed it. At the time the battery was 8 years old.

Wooden ware and pottery fair and handicraft festival in Ribnica (~35 km SSE of Ljubljana). It says in the article there were tens of thousands of visitors. When I went for a lunch, about ten gypsies sat next to me and one of them had a machete with him, so it was a bit uncomfortable.
