They used to do that before 1989, and unfortunately many haven't changed their view ever since

Yeah true. You should hear how many people still talk about the "eastern bloc". It's mindboggling.

I wonder if many people in Western Europe still use also Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia or Karlmarxstadt and Leningrad.

my friends from Spain have been here and still talk about Hungary, Slovenia and all those countries as Eastern Europe. they simply link Eastern Europe with slavic countries (+RO, H, LT, LV, EST) or with ex communist block.

i do it i call our police "milicija" as we did it in yugoslav times, i call Podgorica "Titograd", i often say "Lenjingrad" for St. Peterburg, even "Soviet Union (Sovjetski Savez)" for Russia
and i have friend who still says "Yugoslavia" for Serbia
of course, we do it on purpose

And if you ignore Russia?
Then it's somewhere in Germany...

I think that's the point: most people don't think of the size of Russia (or can't imagine it).

I don't see any reason why people don't want their countries to be called "Eastern European". In most of the continents east is more developed.

Nah, except for Yugoslavia, I don't think many will refer to the SU or CS.

What is an increasing problem here, are criminal people from Romania (gypsies), I was just browsing the regional newspaper here online, and I saw at least 3 stories about criminal activities from yesterday. Those people really ruin the public opinion about Romania, which is a wonderful country.

It seems to me that anything former communist is considered Eastern Europe among Westerners. Personally I see no problem with that, don’t mind being considered EE; what I really dislike is that former Yogos are being put in the same category by many, or Croatia-is-a-war-zone attitude, geez. Brrr, hate it
