Is it just me, or are Google directions getting more and more absurd?

I thought that too, it leads you too much over motorways, prolonging your journey considerably. For planning trips I rather use viamichelin.com it is much better.

I use common sense. I don't need some computer to tell me what route is best.

I was driving from Nürnberg to Zwolle wednesday, and I wanted to take A73-A70-A7 north to Kassel. However, TomTom kept me redirecting to A3 all the way past Bamberg. While it's only 1km longer via A73-A70 than via A3-A7.

Then I just navigated to Zwolle, and at Kreuz Dortmund/Unna, the regular routes go up A1/B54 or A1/A2/A3 to Arnhem. I prefered the first route since it's shorter. However, it directed me to the A1 south, I was like "wtf is this, does it want me to go via A1-A45-A40 or something?". That route doesn't make any sense.

Another problem is it rather directs you via a motorway that's 30 km longer, than a 2+1 highway with only 3 traffic lights...

Same here. I think planning your route with maps, navigation and finding the right roads, is a huge part of what makes road trips so much fun. I would never give that up and let a computer decide.

Btw, I don't trust signs either:
e.g. at Heilbronn, Munich is signed via A6 and Nurnberg, instead of A8 via Stuttgart (ok, i can see why, but it is longer and wouldn't be my first choice, unless there were heavy delays on the A8)
Through traffic in the Lyon area is directed around the city, when you can just stay on the A7 and take the tunnel (unless it's rush hour, much faster)
oh and same thing in Vienna, if you're going from south to north, the signs try to direct you via the S1

Yeah. A famous example is Paris.

If you want to go direction Bordeaux, GPS let's you follow A3-BP, while the signage lets you follow A3-A86. This confuses many people who trust too much on their GPS.

well, try to change the route planning options: fast - eco - short

it will solve this problem...

(note:
- in the country use the eco or short mode, so you will avoid the long detours on motorways for 1 or 2 minute advantage...

- but in towns the fast mode is better, because it will plan your route on main roads, instead of small streets...)

Nah, the shortest mode sucks bigtime. If I navigate from Kassel to Münster, it goes completely via country roads. 3 hours 06 minutes and 164 km. If I use the fastest option, it's 1 hour 53 minutes and 206 km.

and what about ECO mode? it balances between the fast and short.

or does tomtom have no eco mode?

My TomTom

has the following options:

* fastest route
* shortest route
* avoid motorways
* walking route
* cycling route
* limited speed
