I wonder how many people tried to de-ice their windshields by pooring hot water on it. There are always a bunch of people who think that'll work.

It works, but only with front windscreen with vipers turned on.

Bullshit.

Or previously very damaged windscreen. Also, front windscreens are nowadays laminated and don't shatter without a lot of force. Even in days, when we drove old socialistic cars, which had thin windshields of inferior quality, nothing shattered, even if boiled water was poured on.

I doubt that anyone pours boiling water on their windshield

It happened a lot of times in the Netherlands though. Maybe our windshields are inferior.

Probably not boiling, but 50-60°C water certainly. It's easy (but certainly not fast) way to clean front windshield.

Apparently, it is a problem with damaged windshields (chips, cracks, starbreaks). If you pour boiling water on it, it has a high chance of shattering. Maybe it ain't a problem with lukewarm water.

I don't know what you non-snow nations are doing with your windshields. Both of our cars have damaged windshield and you can pour how much hot water you want on it.

Two thirds of the US have been in a deep freeze for the past 8 days , this has been the longest deep freeze in more then 14 years. Even Florida has dipped below freezing some parts and that is expected to cause Fruit prices to rise.

it could if you splash a pot of boiling water onto frozen windshield. i do it a lot of times (in case of pure ice (like ice rain), not that what remains from snow) but allways with water temperature cca 50°C and i don't splash whole pot at once, there is no danger.
i heard people who destroyed windshields (they probably did it with too much boiling water)

<rant>
So the snow arrived as expected, and my enthusiasm is slowly fading.

I can understand people doing 40kph on snowy (yet straight) road. But how much of a moron one has to be to drive 50 on what is basically a wet road with slight traces of snow... in a four wheel drive car?! Yes, I mean you, bloke in a silver BMW X5 (do they actually make these in any other color than silver or black?), causing a traffic jam on I/38 this afternoon. Is it really that hard for him to notice he's doing something wrong when he's being overtaken by lorries and buses? Would it be really that difficult to pull over and let others pass? Bloody hell.

I know what you're talking about, my dad drives a truck for hobby on Saturdays, and he had to pass numerous cars doing 60 km/h on clean or almost clean motorways. Really annoying.
