That`s what I wrote. For example when Slovakia join Eurozone there was just one single information on a banner on BBC news(what I spotted). The same thing in our school, when someone use some example mainly use ex-british countries or Germany/France (when sometimes other countries might be better example). But yeah, this is quite basic information which everyone should know I think.

Yes, people have no idea about these countries. When I told Estonia would join the eurozone in 2011, they responded "how can such a poor country get the euro?". People really still think in terms of the 1990's about these countries.

Even now you can be still asked from some western European if Slovenia is still in war. But that is normal, in every country there is few tens of percent of population, that has absolutely no geographical and/or historical knowledge.

In UK many people know about Yugoslavia or about war but less about that Slovenia has Euro and HDP is like in Spain (or even higher now?).

I met about 3 people who mix Slovenia with Slovakia and one girl said me after I said I am from Slovakia - "oo, you have really nice sea I was there once"

It's probably because the last time western media were really focused on Eastern Europe was when communism fell and during the war in Yugoslavia. In this period even the biggest ignorants got some information about EE, which wasn't in the best condition back then. However, they didn't bother to refresh their knowledge and since they are pretty much ignorant they don't realise things are changing during 20 years.

On the other hand, if you ask people in EE e.g. if Britain, Sweden, Denmark or even Norway and Switzerland have Euro I'm pretty sure plenty of them would answer yes.

Yes, that`s true. Also many people don`t know what`s difference between GB, UK, England and I bet also many don`t know about Ireland and N. Ireland.

EDIT:

also another challenge is to know what and where is Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia

Google Street View is coming to Estonia! The camera cars are already in Estonia but they haven't started work yet. Unfortunately, Estonian Data Protection Inspectorate has already claimed that there might me legal issues with Google Street View. They say that everyone should have the choice to refuse or avoid taking photos of them.
This is just plain stupidity! If it's public space, everybody can take photos of everybody and everything and put these photos in the internet which hasn't been a problem before. It would just be sad when we couldn't get Street View because of these issues...the same happened in Latvia, for example.

Google Street cars didn't get allowance from Information supervisor (sth like that) to take data in Slovenia, if they don't remove faces, licence plates and similar from pictures already in Slovenia. Export of such raw data outside of Slovenia is forbidden. So for now no Google Stret view from Slovenia.

...and Slovenia. Information commisioner is apparently more powerful then google.

about knowledge of EU members... I am used to it, but that's something normal, lots of people don't know what's happening outside their country. but that normaly depends on one's level of education.

Well, I don't mean it that way. The real euro countries are countries that actually use the EURO valuta. Any new countries getting Euro's soon?

for you

blue - Eurozone, green - ERM II members, red - the rest of the EU

Quote:
The euro is the sole currency of 16 EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. These countries comprise the "eurozone", some 326 million people in total. Estonia will join in 2011.[29]
With all but two of the remaining EU members obliged to join, together with future members of the EU, the enlargement of the eurozone is set to continue further. Outside the EU, the euro is also the sole currency of Montenegro and Kosovo and several European micro states (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City) as well as in three overseas territories of EU states that are not themselves part of the EU (Mayotte, Saint Pierre and Miquelon and Akrotiri and Dhekelia). Together this direct usage of the euro outside the EU affects over 3 million people.
It is also gaining increasing international usage as a trading currency, in Cuba,[30] North Korea and Syria.[31] There are also various currencies pegged to the euro (see below). In 2009 Zimbabwe abandoned its local currency and used major currencies instead, including the euro and the United States dollar.[32]

My next (road) trip: Cairns to Melbourne - almost 4,000 km, or like from Ljubljana to Baghdad.

I saw a Dutch LDV Maxus today... Never heard of that brand. At first I thought it was a Mercedes Sprinter or VW Crafter.
