Everything was already ready for X-mas in Oz as well. It was quite funny to me with 30°C outside...

That sucks! I never leave the holder on for that exact reason...but I have left the GPS in the car, though.

That is why for my new car I got this mount for my Garmin:
http://www.amazon.ca/Garmin-010-1128.../dp/B0035JL4V2

I absolutely love it - it is very stable and doesn't move at all (I've been using it for 6 months already). When I'm done I can just put it away without sticking anything to the windshield - highly recommended!

It is also a great fit for my car's dual-level dashboard:

I have a TomTom, and it's holder is just a plastic circle (5cm diameter) which is almost invisible from the outside when sticked in lower left corner of the windshield. I didn't remove it for at least 2 years and I still have all my windows intact, so either it really isn't noticeable or I park only in safe places

The same map as last year. A map of the roads in Pennsylvania supplied free from PennDOT.

Tip on wall map

I'm moving to a new apartment and I'm thinking of covering one of the living room walls with maps. I'll buy big maps online, but then I want to fix them one a more-or-less pleasant way.

Question is: I was told my new flat will have drywall covering the place, and that I can't drill holes. Do you know of a practical and not costly way to fit a lot of maps (like a mosaic) in a wall?

If everything goes as planned, center map will be a giant US road map, left map an Italian one, right map an Australian one. On the bottom, smaller maps of other countries.

LOL, that's geeky However, I have a poured concrete wall, which makes is almost impossible to drill a hole in it... You can put wallpaper against the wall and then use some pins.

I have a foolish question. I've noticed that European highways seem to have darker asphalt than US ones, is there some difference between them or are the Euro ones just all new? ??

I also noticed darker asphalt in more southern countries of Europe than in Northern Europe...
But as far as I know the new suburbs in the USA have asphalt that looks extremely black...

Usually darker asphalt is a sign of porous draining asphalt, which is ubiquitous in Italy but rare in Germany, for instance...

I just love italian motorways with dark asphalt! driving on them is so smooth, besides, safety in raining is much bigger.

I'm considering some GPS navigation purchase options, and decided to come here in case someone has an opinion. Here is it: I have and old (2007) Garmin 250nüvi with updated maps. It works well, but it's old and doesn't have any dynamic traffic info capabilities or so. And the display is not that good also. So I want to replace it.

Ideally, I'd buy a TomTom 1005 Live, with a 5" screen and so. However, it costs a good deal of money and, unfortunately, I'm not driving that much these days for distant locations.

Then, I'm considering to buy a tablet (Samgung Galaxy or, more likely, an iPad) next summer. I know TomTom has app for Apple devices. The app has dynamic traffic capabilities, but TomTom won't say a word about POI database, lane info etc.

Therefore, I was considering not buying an expensive GPS but, indeed, buy an APP (€ 70) that I could later hook to my iPad (and now my iPhone) and use, instead.

So here is my question: does anyone here use the TomTom GO Live 1005 (or any similar device) and could give me a feedback? What about the TomTom app for Apple devices? Does anyone know of the GPS signal capturing and processing speed of iPads?

Thanks and sorry for bothering

so you're apple fan? ipad will take all your windshield so you will see nothing outside the car.

I was planning on mounting an iPad in front of the radio, not hooked to the windshield.

Asphalt can be made in virtually any color. It just wears out after some years, and it turns from black to gray.

The problem of gray concrete is that road markings are less visible. Sometimes they spray some black graffiti around the road markings to make it more visible...
