I was driving behind this van, when it lost almost the entire back window at 90 km/h. No flat tires fortunately.

My father once told me an episode he was involved in. He was driving on an Italian superstrada, more or less at 110 km/h, behind a RV (Winnebago-like), which had two bicycle attached in the read. Suddenly one of the bikes came off directly towards him, he managed to steer just in time to avoid the bike. He told me that was the scariest thing he experienced on a road, including a couple incidents he was in..

Wow, a major road was just closed in Ljubljana due to an accident and all traffic is diverted to my narrow one-way street. License plates from all over Slovenia and some foreign ones passing right by my house. Surely the busiest day in the history of my street. What a traffic jam.

No no, it's not an April Fool. It was actually presented a month ago, but I didn't notice it.

One thing to keep in mind: urban motorways operate near capacity nearly the entire day. Usually the off-peak hourly volumes are only 20% lower than the busiest peak hour. This is different, most railways do not operate at peak capacity for 3 or 4 hours in a row twice a day. The peak is high, but shorter than on the road.

I once did a bus passenger count for work at the Zwolle railway station. Approximately 90% of all passengers between 6.00 and 10.00 were in the 7.30 - 9.00 timeframe. The buses after 9 am were almost completely empty.
Sorry to bump this back after such a long time, but I was thinking about this in the shower (oh dear). Would the statement "urban motorways operate near capacity nearly the entire day" still hold true in the absence of public transport? My thought experiment as follows:

- Assumption: People prefer cars over PT. Only when roads are congested (operating at capacity) will people switch to PT. This is an extrapolation of the second paragraph quoted above.
- Therefore, people only use PT in peak periods. In this scenario there is no off-peak PT demand.

Let:
r = hourly road capacity
n = hourly passenger demand
p = hourly passenger demand in excess of road capacity.
x = road travel to PT substitution factor

Therefore when a road is congested, demand = n such that r + p = n.

At these times of day, xp switch to PT and (1-x)p people defer travel. x < 1

In the absence of PT, let y be the factor of persons choosing to defer travel. yp persons drive anyway and (1-y)p defer travel.

y < x < 1

In the absence of PT, peak traffic volumes increase yp persons above capacity, therefore a new road would be required with capacity r + yp.

Off-peak demand is unchanged (as n < r at this time of day).

Therefore, in the absence of PT, a road required to meet transport demand would be at least yp below capacity during off-peak periods.

Therefore, these roads would not operate near capacity for most of the day if yp is a reasonably sized number.
