Oh, c'mon. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is at least as "nice," and about the same length and age, as the Tappan Zee. And what views? I suggest you don't actually stop on the Verrazano to admire the Highlands of Navesink. (And where in the New York area - which is what I assume you mean by "around here" - is there a $12 toll? That's a serious, as opposed to a rhetorical, question: I grew up in the area myself....)

That's my point. :-P

Snowman159, there is actually a competition - you can take a ferry between Helsingør and Helsinborg - I remember it was about 250 - 300 DKK one way (there are 3 companies on this route, so the competition is fierce )
I saw 4,050 meters somewhere in the FAQ. My mistake. But if I weren't feeling so lazy, I'd look up the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel - the one from Cape Charles to Virgninia Beach (the "Chesapeake Bay Bridge" I mentioned is the one near Annapolis). Which is 17 miles (about 30 km) long, with two tunnels, four artificial islands, and three bridges. It's not cheap, but I can't imagine it's that over the top.

See, I'm not the only one who thought it was insane! (Seriously, if I were contemplating going to Europe and road-tripping, I'd need to figure out things like mileage (and hence gas purchases), tolls and the like in advance. And perhaps take out a loan.

Yeah, these objects are way overpriced. And then these same nations complain about Slovenian vignettes.

Oh, c'mon! You must know for sure that Slovenian vignette is the most outrageous in Europe!

I find it far more outrageous that you have to pay fortune to cross a freaking tunnel or a bridge. At least you can drive all around Slovenia with a vignette (even though you're planning just a short transit route). Not to mention that those objects were overpriced long before Slovenian vignettes even existed. Moreover, you have free-of-charge alternatives in Slovenia (albeit quite slow), but what alternative do you have for the Mont Blanc Tunnel?

Rates for France:

You can use the chart, or there's a handy map on the last page.

I like the detours to avoid the Mont Blanc tunnel: 152 km via Switzerland and 169 km via Bourg Saint Maurice for make a 22 km trip like Chamonix (F)-Courmayeur (I).

And with this message, this thread has reached 10000 posts!!! Congratulations!

Edit (August 31th, 2011): No, this is no longer the 10,000th post, it's only the 9,991st. keber has now written 10,000th post here, 36 hours later than this one that used to be the 10,000th post on the roadside rest area.

^ Nordkapptunnelen: about € 36,55 if you are driving a car and you're unlucky enough to have another three mates inside. Remember: car & driver means one toll, but you will have to pay an extra tax of NOK 47 (€ 6) for each other person inside.

What if you hide your mates in the trunk?

Just arrived in Munich from Brescia, this time not through Brennerpass but crossing the Switzerland. A4 Brescia-Milan, A8 Milan-Lainate, A9 Lainate-Chiasso, A2 Chiasso-Bellinzona, A13 all the way to Mäder (with a short detour in Lietchenstein just to say I've been there), A14 Altach-Lindau, BAB A96 Lindau-München.

Quite a ride, if you ask me.

Trip from Ljubljana to Bratislava (next week):
train - 156 € retour ticket, 8 h driving one way (if you don't miss any of 3 changeovers)
car - 100 € gasoline with (A) vignette, 4 h driving one way

Public transport? Yeah right.

I'm against public transport in general, but sometimes it might be better. it depends on infrastructure. Paris - Lyon for instance is better by TGV then a car (2h vs 5h in a car). while Ljubljana - Vienna would still be acceptable by train (5h40), Bratislava lacks of direct connection, so travelling time is much longer.

Especially if 4 people go it is so much cheaper than if you had to travel by train.

Well, it never will be better. All trains go via Vienna and it doesn't really make difference if you had to change train. Trains from Vienna to Bratislava go every 30 mins and journey takes 50 mins. It could be about 30 mins if they will built new shorter track. Sadly they are going to improve existing one.

Actually my first plan was to travel by train (one way only) despite longer journey time. But when I learned the price, I changed my mind.

Viamichelin must have forgotten the Europabrücke toll, another 8€ (for a crossing time of 10 seconds)

No, sorry, that was correct: Verona-Brennero 15.50€ + 7.90€ Austrian vignette + 8€ Europabrücke: 31.40€
