It doesn't work everywhere though (Slovenia, Trieste (edit: because it leads to Albania) ...).

A road designed like that should not handle 15 000 vehicles per day in the first place

you get no argument from me

i just watched year after year, as this and many other roads deteriorated to the point of having more fixes than original covering
this in a county capital where we only spend 1% of the budget / year on roads (700k EUR / year in a town of 70k people!!!)

i was just wondering if sh!t like this exists elsewhere..?

Badajoz is the biggest city for miles, so a lot of people in Portugal do not have a choice but to go there if they want their children to be born in a hospital. Sometimes the ambulance crew ask if they want to go to Badajoz or Lisbon, Castelo Branco or Cáceres, Bragança or Zamora etc . I once read an interview with hospital workers in Badajoz who said that they knew all the Portugese swearwords. The interior of Portugal is pretty much empty.

Interesting that in the UK women in labour do not generally use ambulances

The interior of Portugal is also quite poor for western European standards.

Yepp, you both got it right, and you obviously did . Anyway, Elvan ambulances go there for the maternity in Badajoz.

Chris, Portugal is poor for Western standards, full stop. The minimum wage is €500 and the average wage €800

This is more or less like Slovakia. 317 € minimum wage and the average is 750 € (highest in IT, about 1600 I think). Damn it anyway, both countries are poor. Well we are still living in one of the richiest parts of the world so I guess it isn't completly bad.
