Chris, one question. How much are Dutch drivers acquainted with the "zip" rule? The end of the spitsstrooke made me ask that. Many times I seem to be only one of the few that drive till the last possible moment before the road goes from three lanes to two etc... I feel then bit uneasy, thinking, what do they think of me? .

Just a TV spot watched some minutes ago:

"Now you do not drink when driving, now when you do respect speed limits.... just stop!!. For your safety, stop in long journeys every two hours for rest".

(or something translated like that...)

It is considered very rude to do that in the UK and in Portugal , especially in the UK, sometimes if one lane runs out you have a queue in the lane that doesn't run out for a few miles, in fact drivers seeing this before there is signage about it go in the lane with the queue, and then you have some people that "jump the queue" by going in the free lane as far as possible, they are not liked by the other road users at all, and often they get stuck at the end because people won't let them out

In Germany it is normal to do that, and when I first came here I wasn't comfortable with the idea. I have to say I still don't like it: one should change lane when there is the possibility, not at the last time.

In Italy is considered rude and should not be done, even if rules are broken all the time.

In Italy when there is nothing else to show they put a very stupid and annoying sign. I can't find a picture on the net but it basically says "for news and updates, www.autostrade.it", as if one usually drives with his laptop on. And, I must add, these signs were in place way before the introduction of modern smartphones.

Well, I would say its about the utilizing the whole road when there are lanes available. It is certainly stupid and against the idea of this rule to change the lanes all the time, because the other lane seems more free at the moment. However, when I am approaching a traffic jam, being in the faster and freer lane, I would suggest driving till the end of that lane, or till there are cars slowing me down in front of me.

If this rule is applied, it can effectivelly shorten the lenght of a traffic jam for this distance (X/L), where X is the lenght of the not used lane in traffic jam, L is the number of lanes which are being reduced. A 6 km traffic jam caused by reducion of three lanes into two, where drivers dont use 3 km of the left lane could be reduced to a 5 km of a traffic jam if this rule would be applied.

When we continuosly reduce 5 lane motorway to one lane due to the construction works ,and there is around 5 km of unused left lanes, the traffic jam could be shortened by, 0,2*5= 1 km if the rule would be applied.
