There are lots of very pretty gypsies in Portugal. The older ladies not so much but the young ones are.

People in Portugal don't like gypsies much but they're not as disliked as in Eastern Europe, I think that they're jealous, they're known (at least in my town) as being very clever business people. In Portugal gypsies speak with the same accent as the region that they're from. In the UK gypsies look like the rest of the population and speak with an Irish accent

The ones in Finland are a different story. I see them alot on the Stockholm-Helsinki ferry, and sometimes get to speak to them. The male always dresses smart, the female wears traditional, with a dress the size of Bulgaria.

do you have gypsies at all in Italy left? in last 2-3 years we became flooded by them in HR, and they regularly drive Italian registred expensive cars, in some cases they have SPanish plates. they behave totaly unacceptable, live and move in herds (for instance, you are drinking a beer in nice quite bar, and suddenly come 3-4 Audi A8/Mercedes S or CLS/BMW 6 or 7, double park on the road in front of the bar, and few gypsy families come out of them, occupy whole bar, yell and speak loud, and their children are breaking glasses, running around (also on the street), screaming...)

Been there, seen that. Many cities in Northern Italy live this situation. I don't know about expensive cars, but sure they monopolize buses: in the best cases they speak loud and scream, but in the worst cases... you better put your hand on your purse and wallet.

i am really sorry about the fact that gypsies cannot integrate to our society despite all help from all possible organizations.
there are exceptions, but unfortunatelly, well integrated gypsies are exception, not the opposite ones.

Indeed it is, and I regret it. But it is also incorrect for the policemen to be shy in applying law against this type of behaviour, fearing to be accused exactly of political incorrectness. Look here, it ain't Waziristan, it is Eastern Europe. And no authority will decide demolition, because of course, would be politically incorrect. And all of those let's say houses were made with money from stealing and begging in Milan, Paris or London, but we are pretending not to notice, because it would be also politically incorrect to affirm, or even think, that an entire village is stealing and begging abroad. Unfortunately for Romania, I can give you many examples of such villages.
And many of the ones which remained here are doing the same things but at a lower level. An entire neighborhood stealing electricity, for example.

I agree, I hate this type of discussions , but as g.spinoza suggested, sometimes you need to speak the truth.

In other news, we had a 5.8 or 5.9 (depending which source you believe) earthquake about 45 minutes ago, felt from at least North Carolina to New Hampshire. Where I work (the 6th floor of an 8-floor building), I and most people around me felt definite horizontal back-and-forth movement and got the heck out. (Back in now.)

The worst earthquake I felt close by was a 4.7 Richter. Enough to make a small lateral movement, that I notice only because I was sit in a chair holding my hands in a table.

I was in the Marche-Umbria earthquake of 1997, moment magnitude 6.1, smack in the middle. Part of my house moved with respect to the other, little cracks opened in the walls and some water pipes broke. A 2.5 meter tall piece of furniture collapsed, breaking all dishes and glasses in it. My cat never recovered.
