Hello, this is my first post on The roadside rest area and I will start with telling you what I'm interested in

I call myself Licenseplateman since I love to spot license plates.

Otherwise I am interested in music, movies, old video games, cars, trucks and of course roads

I will probably be a great spammer

That's cold for sure. -33 in the southeast. The coldest temperature I have ever felt is -25 I think. That was during the extremely long and cold winter in Sweden of 2009. This year my town Växjö's coldest temperature has been around -20 and that was a few days ago. It has now become cooler and today it's between -5 och -10. A few days ago it was -48 or something in northern Sweden. Not far from the coldest temperature in Sweden ever (-53 in Vilhelmina but that's not official) The coldest official temperature ever in Sweden was -52,6 in Vuoggatjålme.

why is it so 'warm' at the sea? doesn't the baltic sea get frozen during winter?

Last night around 11 p.m. we had -8 near the Adriatic coast! This is Siberian cold for us!

Like everywhere the sea (and big lakes as well) changes temperature slower than land, so in winter it's "warmer" (less cold) on the coast and in summer it's cooler. But Baltic sea still gets frozen.

The beginning of this winter was relatively warm and it has been properly cold for only a couple of weeks. Although the sea is frozen in smaller gulfs and between islands, the rest of the sea is still open and provides heat to adjacent coastal areas. Ice in the Baltic Sea today:

The Lake IJssel and Lake Marken have frozen almost entirely in the Netherlands, and that's not an every year occurence. Even the Wadden Sea is partially frozen and ferries have been reduced. They use ice breakers at major shipping routes. The rivers are not frozen yet.

I assume they keep shipping lanes open. The Gulf of Bothnia usually freezes over entirely, but I don't think the Baltic Sea between Sweden and the Baltic States entirely freezes.

By the way, we call the Baltic Sea the "Oostzee" or East Sea in the Netherlands, just like the Germans do (although they also use the term Baltikum). The term "Baltische zee" is not very common in the Netherlands.

It's called East sea in Sweden too (Österssjön) because it's the eastern part of our coast.

Can you drive across the Gulf of Bothnia when it's frozen?

Btw, what I'd really like to see one day is frozen Ljubljanica river. I don't know when it froze last time, but not in my lifetime.
