Car thefts in the EU:

Looks like it's best to stay at home or go on a trip to Bulgaria or Romania! Although I think it would be better to count number of thefts per 100,000 cars rather than per 100,000 inhabitants, but differences wouldn't be that big, I think (except that we beat Romania :P). I'll stay away from Western Europe from now on.

easy to explain. More luxury cars in Western Europe, so more profit per stolen car.

They also like breaking in though and not stealing the car itself.

Thiefs have broken into my neighbours car 6 times now. He has a VW Touran with a very popular built-in Satnav system from his work. He drives a lot through the BeNeLux for his job, so has a car from the job... It varies from VERY professional (disabling alarm, cutting out glass like you always see in action movies, carefully taking out the Satnav system) to some rougher methods (smashing in glass (after disabling alarm) and ripping stuff out).
In 1 of the cases they actually know who did it, but don't have evidence. A few days before, my other neighbour had his front windscreen replaced because of various cracks after an interaction with a big bird and the glass-repairmen or however the crap you call them were constantly checking out the car that was broken into 2 days later!
They wondered last time why their dogs were barking at night... Next morning they knew why... The thiefs should be lucky that the dogs didn't break out. They would've had 2 HUGE Saint Bernard's chasing them. and believe me, their dogs... They bite in such cases. They are (or were, they don't have them anymore ) not the kind of dogs you mess around with :p

An no, I do not live in a shitty neighbourhood. Well, not THAT shitty

Yeah, all those Bulgarians are here breaking into the cars! In 2 out of 6 cases it was as the police called it 'the Bulgarian method', which was the professional method described above.
The police described it as follows: they come over with scooters/mopeds and start breaking into your car. They then drive away. After a short period of time they get to a pre-set location where there's a van waiting for them. They load the scooters into the van and drive on with the van. So while you're searching for scooters, they're already in a van.

I don't think there're 90 times more luxurious cars in Denmark than in Bulgaria per capita (or 61 times more per number of cars). Actually, Eastern Europe is known for having many cheap and many luxurious cars. As for more profit, cost of living is also higher in Western Europe.

This is about car thefts, not breaking into cars.

Yes, because when you steal cars you can't steal only a part of a car...

It was meant as a joke dude...

Also, the most often stolen car here has always been VW Golf, which isn't luxurious.

I wonder where the market of stolen built-in navigators is. Who buys them? I can understand stealing a dash-mounted TomTom (even if they are nowadays cheap bulk products, not luxury), but where is the demand for big number of car-specific built-in devices?

Polish car

Hahaha, prowerb "go to Poland - your car is already there", very popular in Germany in 90's, began rather out of date :P

In Poland the most commonly stolen car is VW Passat. But amount of those cars on our street is the reason; after all, nothing works without any failures...

Well, it's still funny. As for high number of car thefts in Italy, I remember when I was in Turin by car. I was looking for a parking spot in the city-centre. It was full of some nothing-to-do Africans, who were looking at me and my car in the way "we'll steal your car". I parked in a garage then.
