In the major city closest to the storm (which New York, regardless of what national and international media seem to think*, isn't), it seems to be dying down. The thing sped up unexpectedly and the center of it passed just south of us hours ahead of expected (was supposed to be the middle of the night), the rain stopped here an hour or two ago, the wind outside sounds like what we get with a winter storm; haven't (fingers crossed) lost power, which was my main concern. My mother's o.k. too, closer to New York than I am (and farther from the storm).

Transit, schools and my office still shut down tomorrow - transit and schools aren't, they say, closed because of the weather as such but so that everything can be inspected. My office is closed, officially, "out of concern for staff's safety." Interstates in southeastern Pennsylvania will be closed until 2 a.m. tonight, non-emergency traffic on all roads in Delaware is prohibited. Parts of the Boardwalk in Atlantic City have washed away (or washed inland into people's homes).

But they're still expecting a "storm surge" on the coast, including the New York area. And bad enough rain inland of us as the storm moves on could cause flooding here later in the week. They were talking about high waves on the Great Lakes as the winds reach that area - even 20- to 25-foot waves (6.5 to 8 meters) in Chicago, a good 900 miles/1500 km from the ocean.

Just went out for the first time since Sunday; we're getting light rain and a cold breeze (coldest it's been outdoors during the day since spring), but no damage more significant than small branches down. (At least in town; TV's reporting downed trees in other neighborhoods).

Remarkably, the center of the storm passed 10 miles from us.

My mother and brother are without power (as is most of New Jersey, I gather) but all right.

Serious storm that is for sure, but still too much unnecessary hype in most media.

In other news, let's go ski. I expect -10°C in the middle of the day.

Weather on Sunday doesn't look good at all. Looks like driving in the rain from Portoroz to Ingolstadt. If that will be the case, which option would you choose?
http://goo.gl/maps/XibTv or http://goo.gl/maps/VaX5g

I planned driving through Italy and also stopping in Trieste.
But if it's going to rain all the time, then could be it will just be driving and stopping only for breaks.

Sandy is not very notable for its wind speeds. Such windspeeds occur dozens of times per year. However, the expanse of the system is huge, and more significant is the storm surge. Over 80 houses in Queens burned to the ground, 7 subway tunnels are full of water and at least 2 road tunnels as well. Millions are without power and the flooding in general is unprecedented. Last year's Irene caused a surge of only 4 - 5 feet, Sandy caused a surge of 14 feet in New York City.

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona fide, electrified, six-car monorail!

Media circulated video of a shark swimming in the flooded streets of New York... But watching it, I got the feeling it is fake...

Well, the helicopter views of towns on the New Jersey coast where everything is covered in sand for blocks inland and some houses are knocked off their foundations are presumably not fake. But it only matters if it happens in Slovenia, I guess.

Yup, I saw it too, but it was in near Brigantine Beach, New Jersey. Some people say that's photoshopped, but...

of course it matters and we symphatize with you guys that are on the east coast, must be horrible. what keber tried to say is that there is this huge media coverage only because this is happening in the states. if it would be somewhere else, it wouldn't 'matter' so much.

Here is another fake shark photo they have posted around:

On a side note, due to budget cuts I have to erase all stuff that is written around letters, so placenames like Sabiñánigo will become Sabinanigo from now (It sounds weird without tilde and acute, but there is no money, so...).

it depends. A23 is gorgeus, but it costs 10€ or 11€ from Molfancone. meanwhile Karavanke tunnel costs 6,80€, and you will have the vignette already. for the rain I would recommend A4 and A23 pavement. It's up to you
