I paid about the equivalent of €0.68/liter today.

Sounds low to you guys, but it's high for us! That is $3.99 a gallon.

They are dammit talking about a € 0.08 charge per driven kilometer in the Netherlands, when road taxes are canceled.

That means that i am about to pay € 2,000 per year instead of € 336 on road taxes.

Yeah, and that is on top of the ever rising fuel prices, which also consists for 2/3rd in tax.

They are greedy and always looking for ways to increase taxes.

VAT is going up by 1% next year, Slurptaxes for some cars, particle matter tax, extra aircraft tax, new packaging tax (can you believe that), road tax, sewage tax, property tax, all increased way more than wages increased (reduce purchasing power) or are newly introduced.

Actually our finance minister (labor party) said he want to pursue the Swedish model.

That means paying your asses off on tax.

I have nothing against paying some taxes, however, it becomes more and more, and where does it end?

Wow, do the taxes at least get spent on useful things? One thing I noticed, though, is that Dutch highways are extremely well maintained. From all the pictures and videos that I've seen, Dutch roads seem to me among the best in the world.

I guess this is why the roads in North America aren't usually of such a high quality, since our taxes our much lower.

Mind you, the taxes in Canada are much higher than in the US due to the more extensive social infrastructure and national healthcare system. Gas prices in Canada are higher than in the US, although not nearly as high as that of Europe (yet). Recently our prices went up by a lot too, and in fact, yesterday there was a big rise. I paid $1.25/L yesterday. This is quite a lot in North American standards, especially now that the Canadian dollar is pretty much worth the same as the American. And Ontario is actually not so bad, some Canadian provinces have higher prices.

Presumably when you have to pay a 110% income tax

The quality is very good, but the quantity (capacity) is not. However, the amount of car-related taxes income exceeds by far the road budgets. It's like they recieve 6 - 7 times more than they spend on roads.

Maybe a little present? Maybe a shiny crashbarrier?

Well, his time has been informing. Now I am amazed and in awe for the Struma Motorway and it's shiny crashbarriers. I feel more educated now.
