@Road UK: Why you get angry everytime someone criticize a random aspect of the American society, culture or politics? I've nothing against Americans as people but I don't think it's offensive to say that weapons ownership should be controlled, it's just an opinion.

Clear and simple, every crime in the world happends thanks to Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and IV. Its not Americans fault neither Europeans. Case closed. I just wonder how the world will look like when GTA V comes out. Mayans maybe miscalculation the world end, with one year short.

So you're saying that you can judge a country and everything about it just by driving through it? That must require a superpower.

My friend met a taxi driver in Montreal who was more knowledgeable about the foreign policy issues in the Baltic States than your average German is, yet he had never been to Europe...

I really doubt the cruise tourists who visit Tallinn in the summer really know anything about the country they're visiting (at least the majority don't).

Are you referring to those arriving from Helsinki and Stockholm on the scheduled ferries for a day or night trip, or those ones cruising a week or more on a huge cruise ship?

I am quite sure that most of the Finns know the basic facts about Estonia and its history. Unfortunately, that is sometimes hidden under a non-civilized behaviour.

I'm referring to tourists who arrive on huge cruise ships and spend half a day in Tallinn's Old Town until they board the ship once again and sail to another city.

I never said that. And I don't just drive through countries , although I have every right to criticize roads in Belgium and Poland.

The thing is though that American society is associated with gun related violence. Everything we (In Belgium and I'm sure in many parts of Europe) get to see on television (today it's less but especially in the 90ties) that comes from the USA has either to do with extreme violence (like all the US action movies), sex (porn, videoclips,...) or drugs (movies, documentairies,....). The USA promotes itself that way through the movies they make wich people watch all around the world.

As a small kid the only thing I ever knew of the USA is they like to fight gun battles, blow up cars and fight wars.

Today, all the violent videogames come from the USA and are mostly from an American point of view. These video games show extreme violence, insane gun battles and douzens of differend ways to kill your enemy in horrific ways.

In this way, people are influenced by the "ultra-violent American society". While in practise, this might not be the case, but this is how your country comes forward to many places around the world. So I'm really not surprised reporters use that term.

I played some "violent" games when I was younger, but I'm a very peaceful person. I don't think there is a link.

All depends on the character I think. I know this 15 year old kid, has a heart of gold, and is totally against violence. All he does is play Counter Strike, Call of Duty and Gta all day long.

I've played tons of violent video games, it has never influenced me but I'm sure crazy minds can get their inspiration in such things... Healthy minds don't kill and don't go on a killing spree... Not that i think violent videogames should be forbidden...not at all.

I was just saying that, the USA does come across as violent country in the things most people get to see from USA 'culture'. If you could call it like that.

Also American foreign policies after 9/11 but also before (Cold War, Vietnam, Iraq,...) have been seen in Europe as a proof that "America is violent". However, those are only decisions of a central goverment and shouldn't made the majority of citizens guilty for that (I'm sure that most American citizens are against the war and the exploitation of poor countries committed by US companies).

@ Penn I don't think you really got the point of what I'm saying.

though your stats show that the USA does rate high on homicide, about the same in mediocore crime and lower on petty crimes than EU countries. I do think most people know that smaller crimes are way more frequent in the EU than in the USA.

That's not really what I was talking about though. I was talking about the immage the USA gives to rest of the world. You know, the facade of a country... not what's behind it.
